Weekly Journal Entry 4
Weekly Journal Entry 4
This was a very exciting week. On Monday and Tuesday, I focused on doing more
research on nurse-led annual wellness visits. I didn’t have any meetings, so I spent the day
reading articles and becoming more familiar with the benefits of AWVs. On Wednesday, I had a
Cardiff mapping and project work meeting. I was finally able to officially meet Philip Hudson,
who is a biostatistician on this project. We spent the meeting getting acquainted with the work
that I’ll be doing. I learned a lot of information at the meeting, so I made sure to take good notes
so that I could start mapping the data. My responsibility currently with CARDIFF is to take the
data sent to DPH from the Grady and Albany Police Departments and clean it. This involves
renaming variables and finding the latitude and longitude of the locations to be able to geocode
them later in the project. Philip gave me a lot of resources to be able to practice coding. He sent
me a link for learning R, which is something that I will be practicing in my free time. For now, I
am using basic code in Excel to clean the data. It’s good to learn a wide variety of software,
especially because I may not always have access to certain software if it’s not free. I spent the
rest of the day looking over the resources in our data folder and the steps for recoding the data,
which involves a lot of steps to make sure the data isn’t altered.
Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities and Older Adults. This is one of many meetings that
my coworkers will send me. I try to attend all of them if I’m available because they are a great
way to learn more about the topics I work on and I get to make connections. At this meeting, I
was able to connect with Kalie Burke, who works for the Georgia Department of Behavioral
Health and Developmental Disabilities, and Keilondria Robertson, who works for DPH. I was
able to talk to them about my projects, and they told me to reach out if they could offer any

emergency preparedness.
On Friday, I attended a meeting with UGA to discuss creating a survey for family
physicians for GAFP-DPH and CARE. I'm hoping that in the next few weeks I’ll be able to assist
their team in creating the survey. I spent the rest of the day practicing cleaning up the data from
Grady and APD. This was definitely a challenge at first, learning how to gain access to the
encrypted files and transfer them to the master data folder. After practicing on one file and
looking at the data cleaning a previous intern did, I was able to finally get the hang of it. It is a
bit time-consuming to rename the variables and add the geolocation, but it was still fun.
