About my Week

I began my internship of Monday May 9 as a Medical Assistant at Vein Specialists of the

South. As soon as we got there my supervisor took me around the building I will be working in

as well as all of the other buildings such as SpaMedical, the administration building, and the

Aesthetic Center. After the tour, I began to shadow one of the other Medical Assistants as she let

us watch her learn the sterilization techniques such as prepping the operating rooms, cleaning the

surgical instruments after the procedures, and using the technology utilized for sterilization. This

took up most of the morning and then I took a small break for lunch. After lunch the rest of the

afternoon consisted of HIPAA and OSHA trainings as well as completing documents needed by

the internship site.

On Tuesday, I began to assist with prepping rooms with other Medical Assistants and

sterilizing equipment with supervision. Most of the morning consisted of bouncing around from

exam rooms to operating rooms and assisting with anything needed. In the afternoon, I shadowed

my first New Patient visit and learned how to ask questions regarding medical history, measure

patients for compression leggings, and how to chart the patients past medical history, symptoms,

and treatment plans.

Wednesday consisted of learning how to use the medical software that we use to store

patient records and charts. In addition to this, I practiced with a new patient and learned how to

create their chart. On Thursday, I got to chart a new patient visit on my own, but still with

supervision in case I had any questions. I did not conduct the visit, I was only tasked with

charting what the lead Medical Assistant wrote. Thursday was also a really cool day because I

got to stay in the OR and observe and entire procedure. My time in the OR consisted of watching

and listening to Dr. Harper and the PA-C that were performing the procedure and completing any

tasks that were asked of me, such as learning how to take an ultrasound picture of the tip of the

catheter to the end of the vein that was being closed off.

Friday was a slow day, there were no procedures scheduled and only three new patients. I

began prepping for a patient scheduled for Monday and charted a new patient visit. Around

11:00 a medical device sales rep for lymphedema therapy came and we had a “learning lunch”.

The sales representative provided lunch for the office while she informed us of a new ma chine

utilized for lymphedema patients.
