mathematics to the real world, effects of mathematics on the academic achievement of

students’, students’ attitude towards learning mathematics, the impact of teaching

methods in the learning outcomes of students’.

Related literature encompasses a range of materials published in diverse sources

like books, scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, and other publications, originating

from local, national, and international sources.

Application of mathematics to the real world. Professionals in different areas

emphasize the value of using mathematics in real-life context. When learners link

mathematics to practical scenarios, they not only understand mathematic concepts more

effectively but alsoi build crucial skills for addressing real-world problems.

A research by De Corte, E. et al (2000) titled “Connecting mathematics problem

solving to the real world” emphasizes the critical link between mathematics problem-

solving and real-world applications. It highlights the importance of mathematical

modeling, a complex process involving understanding a situation, constructing a

mathematical model, interpreting outcomes, and communicating results. The study

challenges traditional approaches to word problems in mathematics education, revealing a

prevalent tendency among students to exclude real-world knowledge when solving

problems, leading to non-realistic responses. Evidence from various studies across

different countries underscores the need to shift towards a modeling perspective in

teaching mathematical problem-solving to bridge the gap between mathematics and the

real world.

The study demonstrates that current mathematics education practices often fail to

cultivate students' inclination towards genuine mathematical modeling in problem-

solving. Interventions focusing on sensitizing students to the importance of considering

real-world aspects have shown limited effectiveness. To address this issue, a shift

towards presenting more authentic, performance-based word problems is proposed. By

enhancing the authenticity of problem scenarios and encouraging students to engage in

mathematical modeling, educators can empower students to develop a more practical

understanding of mathematics in everyday contexts, fostering a deeper connection

between problem-solving and real-world applications.
