AREUMA COFFE SHOP

Design Concept
Many styles can suit coffee shops, as many people with different tastes widely
use them. Japandi is chosen among the many design styles that are currently popular to
attain a peaceful and cozy ambiance. It also focuses on simplicity and functionality,
which is the goal of this shop. This type of design concept aims for a clean look by
breaking shapes down into their most basic components—a minimalist approach. It only
uses pieces that serve the purpose of keeping the space simple and uncluttered. The
overall concept will justify the theme of this coffee shop, as it is named “Areuma Coffee
Shop.” Areuma comes from the combination of 'Areum', a native Korean word meaning
"beauty,” and aroma, which means pleasant smell. The name describes what this shop
can provide: the lovely smell of coffee that comforts the user and the aesthetic appeal of
the shop, which is calm and stylish. A minimalist approach is effective. Less is more,
and simplicity is beauty. If a place can calm people down in the world we live in, people
will visit more frequently.

Materiality
1. Wood – Japandi makes use of natural materials, particularly wood, which is
warm and reflects the light to create a sense of space. It is also simple to clean
and long-lasting. The entertainment area's flooring is made of wood as well as
the furniture and ceiling of the shop. Additionally, wood slats are used as wall
decorations and as a blocking screen in front of the restroom for privacy.
2. Concrete – It requires minimal maintenance and is durable. Given that the coffee
shop can quickly get stains on its floor, it is an ideal choice. Light grey polished
concrete is used as the floor of the majority of the shop’s spaces.
3. Rattan – It is aesthetically pleasing because of its unique appearance and
ecologically friendly nature. It is a feature of the store's accessories and furniture.
Because of its flexibility and lightweight, it can provide users with great comfort.
4. Ceramic – It is utilized for the flooring in the restrooms as well as accent pieces
like vases. It is easy to maintain and long-lasting. As accepting imperfections is
one of Japandi's traits, it can still be used as decoration even if it breaks.

Design Considerations
1. Aesthetic – The coffee shop wants to make people feel better, and one way to do
so is by designing aesthetically pleasing structures. Users who come to the shop
to work appreciate it as it increases their productivity. To create a cozy ambiance,
the designer resorted to a neutral color scheme for the entire design. Given their
neutral hues and distinctive styles, rattan and pottery are also used. Lastly, a
black accent is achieved through the application of minimalist paintings.
2. Lighting – A coffee shop should have a light, airy space, especially if it serves as
a venue of work for others. To maximize natural light during the day, the designer
strategically positioned the seats next to the window. Artificial light is provided by
pendant and recessed lights when the sun is not out. Warm colors and white
walls are further used to reflect light throughout the area and create a sense of
space.
3. Thermal Comfort – The building can’t attain natural ventilation that’s why thermal
comfort is considered by providing appliances that will ease the heat like Air-
condition. To purify the air inside the coffee shop, putting plants would help.
Using rattan also gives thermal comfort to the users as it is lightweight and airy.
4. Circulation – A smooth flow for both the workers and the customers is considered
to lessen the hassle while providing the customer’s needs and ensuring
everyone’s safety while exploring the shop. An open-plan layout is used to
maximize the spaces and the clearances are followed based on the standards for
space planning. The alignment of the seats is carefully planned as well.
5. Ergonomics – Considering customers frequently spend longer time in coffee
shops, furniture and fixtures are carefully designed to ensure that the users are
comfortable both utilizing and exploring the space. As it is a characteristic of
Japandi and has been demonstrated to be the coziest dimension, low-profile
furniture is given attention.
6. Accessibility – The coffee shop is for everyone; the spaces should be inclusive
for individuals especially those with mobility limitations. The designer considers
ensuring easy access for all the users regardless of their abilities. The
clearances that are taken into account were based on wheelchair accessibility. A
ramp is also provided to the elevated entertainment area to let all of the users
enjoy and use every space available in the coffee shop.
