CURTAIN WALL AND CLADDIND
I. INRUCTION: The construction industry is full of highly specific materials,
techniques and terminology, especially as you venture specialized trades. As
Engineers, Architects and Subcontractors, it is necessary to take into consideration
this two concepts which are; curtain wall and cladding in order to carry out the
building as required by the client.

II. CLADDING:

In construction cladding is simply the application of one type of material over another. It
can be made from virtually any construction material and can serve a huge array of
functions.

II.1. FUNCTIONS OF CLADDING

These may include providing protection and /or insulation from external elements like;
 Wind, rain, intense sunlight, heat or cold;
 Dampening sound;
 Providing security and/ or privacy;
 Protecting against the spread of fire within a building;
 Or serving as an exterior façade.

II.2. COMMON TYPES OF CLADDING

 Bricks, stones, wood, metal, concrete or ceramic exterior sliding;
 Glass curtain wall;
 Interior wall treatments like wainscoting or tilework;
 Specialised interior cladding like acoustic panels or thermal insulation;
 Preventative features like fire-proof paneling or rain screens.
II.3. ADVANTAGES OF CLADDING
 One of the best aspects of cladding is the many different materials one can use. This
allows the architecture to project the right style and atmosphere that the designer wants.
 Cladding can be quite ecofriendly, it can be made from recycle materials.
 Cladding can protect the building from the elements and withstand harsher weather
conditions.
 This method requires less maintenance.
II.4. DISADVANTAGES OF CLADDING
 Cladding can be very expensive depending on the materials used and as concrete has been
known to be one of the most expensive option.
 Cladding can take a very long time to install and if the building isn’t structurally sound,
the installation process could be delayed even further withstanding the weight addition.
 Even though this method can be less maintenance, it is fixed to the building itself. So, due
to structural or elemental complications or if the cladding has been poorly fitted, it may
break or fall apart and can devastate the building.
 This method may not be load-bearing but the building ‘s foundation do have to bear the
cladding. This means greater considerations about the strength of the foundations and can
add costs to other aspects of the building’s construction to accommodate the cladding.

III. CURTAIN WALLS

As previously mentioned, curtain wall is one type of cladding, which generally envelopes
the full extent of a building’s exterior.
Curtain wall typically refers to aluminum framed systems set with recurring units
of glass, panels or other building materials.

III.1 FUNCTIONS OF A CURTAIN WALL

 When a building is covered in glass curtain wall, it often appears to be made out of
floor- to- ceiling windows, at multiple stories high.
 The curtain wall systems receive their name due to the fact that their components
hang (like a curtain) from the face of a floor slab. It can be constructed from any type
of frame, cladding or covering materials.
 Curtain wall is perhaps mostly frequently seen on offices buildings, but it makes
appearances in nearly every type of commercial construction, from any shopping
centers to hospitals, sports arenas and hotels. It is also found in some residential
properties, like condominiums or luxury homes.

III.2. TYPES OF CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM

 Stick curtain wall system: These are mainly installed on low rise buildings or
small regions and requires the use of cranes and scaffolding for it to reach a
greater height.
 Unitized curtain wall system: This system is mainly used in high rise buildings
and does not require exterior supports like crane or scaffolding.

III.3. COMPONENTS OF A CURTAIN WALL

The complete unit consist of the following structural elements
1. Transom
2. Mullions
3. Vision Glass
4. Anchor

III.4. ADVANTAGES OF A CURTAIN WALL

a) Aluminum curtain walling can provide lightweight and durable protection from the
elements by absorbing sway caused by wind; it can divert water from rain and even
seismic activity.
b) Curtain walls do not need to be installed on the building’s foundations, they are free-
standing and support their own weight so if they suffer damage or any complications,
they are far less likely to damage the building they’re protected.
c) This method offers far greater protection against water and moisture penetration.
d) This method also provides greater sound insulation and thermal efficiency by helping
keep heat out. This can save a lot of money on air conditioning.
e) Curtain walling installers are skilled laborers whose expertise can provide a more
uniform, modern and sophisticated aesthetic.

III.5. DISADVANTAGES OF A CURTAIN WALL

1. This method requires more general maintenance and periodic washing.

2. A curtain walling system cannot be installed or maintained by anyone, it requires
professionals who specialize in the process.
3. Due to the lightweight and specialized materials, harsh weather can delay installation.

IV. CONCLUSION

When considering the kind of exterior finish you want, it is important to factor in all the
advantages and disadvantages as well as safety considerations and the ideal look of your
building.
