low probability of transition as well as long-lived excited states. Due to the unique
properties of rare earth elements, they can be very beneficial and effective for utili-
zation in fluorescent materials and laser compounds (Li, Xiu, & Sun, 2004;
Sameshima, Ichikawa, Kawaminami, & Hirata, 1999).
Rare earth elements can exhibit excellent chemical activity. They are able to react
with a variety of other elements such as oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, and so on. Due
to the unique structure of rare earth elements, the compounds containing them, both
in solid and soluble form, their adsorption spectra indicate many bands. Since the 17
rare earth elements all possess their own specific wavelength range, as a result, all of
these elements possess their own color (Kenyon, 2002; Li et al., 2004).
Rare earth elements have extraordinary magnetic, catalytic as well as phospho-
rescent attributes, so their utilization has received much attention today. The utiliza-
tion of these elements in various technologies can be beneficial and effective (see
Fig. 1.1). The estimated mean quantity of rare earth elements in the Earth’s crust is
reported to be from about 130 240 mg/g, which is actually remarkably more than
other commonly utilized elements (Zepf, 2013).

Gonzalez, Ferrari, Sanchez-Herencia, Caballero, & Morales, 2016; Milne, Marques

Alshareef, 2018; Kim, Wang, & Alshareef, 2019; Pang et al., 2019; Wang et al.,
2019; Zeng, Cheng, Yu, & Stucky, 2020).
Nanotechnology is generally accepted as the utilization of scientific knowledge
to design, manipulate, and adjust the attributes of compounds such as particle size
and their particle size distribution at the nanoscale with the aim of using attributes
and phenomena dependent on size and structure. The attributes of nanostructured
compounds are more distinct than those of individual atoms or bulk compounds.
Nanotechnology can also offer novel opportunities in order to meet the need for
everyday products to develop these products while enhancing their performance,
reducing the estimated cost of their production, and also utilizing less raw materials
to produce them (Gleiter, 2000; Santos et al., 2015). In addition to design and fabri-
cation, nanotechnology describes characterization of structures, devices, or com-
pounds that possess one or more dimensions less than 100 nm. Today,
nanotechnology as a very significant, key, and helpful technology for a wide range
of industrial uses has been considered by many researchers and scientists. In other
words, nanotechnology has become a major priority for the development of science
and technology policies (Santos et al., 2015; Sudha et al., 2018).
It has been reported that any material that has any external dimension at the
nanoscale (i.e., 1—100 nm) or any material that has an internal structure as well as
a surface structure at the nanoscale is referred to as a nanomaterial. Nanomaterials
can be a natural substance or artificial substance comprising particles (Pokropivny
& Skorokhod, 2007; Sudha et al., 2018). It has been demonstrated that by going to
the nanoscale, each material can exhibit distinct and different attributes compared
to the same material on a larger nonnanoscale scale. Depending on how many
dimensions of each material are at the nanoscale, different classes of nanomaterials
have been introduced. In general, nanomaterials are of three classes in terms of
dimensions: either they have three nanoscale dimensions (such as nanoparticles) or
they have two nanoscale dimensions (such as mineral nanotubes) or they have only
one nanoscale dimension (such as thin films) (Aversa, Modarres, Cozzini, Ciancio,
& Chiusole, 2018; Sudha et al., 2018).
Among the inorganic nanomaterials are nanoceramics, which can display very
significant optical, structural, and electronic attributes as their particle size
approaches the nanoscale (Saleh, 2020; Sudha et al., 2018). Nanoceramics are a
kind of nanocompounds consisting of ceramics and are mostly known as heat-
resistant, mineral, and nonmetallic compounds that can be prepared from

nonmetallic and metal components with dimensions less than 100 nm (Saleh, 2020).
So far, different forms including amorphous or crystalline, dense or porous, as well
as hollow ceramic nanomaterials have been prepared (Sigmund et al., 2006).
Today, ceramic nanostructures have been considered by many research teams owing
to their unique attributes. They can be employed in a variety of fields including cat-
alytic processes, heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions, environmental modifica-
tion, bone repair, energy supply and storage, and construction, as well as imaging
applications (Thomas, Harshita, Mishra, & Talegaonkar, 2015).
Ceramic nanomaterials based on rare earths can exhibit significant or new dis-
tinctive attributes compared to bulk ceramic materials. Advanced ceramic

nanomaterials can be developed by adding the rare earth elements with a certain
ratio to different compounds. So far, various families of advanced ceramic nanos-
tructures based on rare earths have been prepared and studied. Some of the most
notable classes of ceramic nanomaterials based on rare earths that have recently
attracted the attention of various researchers and scientists are shown in Fig. 1.2.
In this book, we focus on recent advances in the preparation methods and appli-
cations of advanced rare earth-based ceramic nanomaterials. Different approaches
to the synthesis of each family of ceramic nanomaterials based on rare earths with
their significant advantages or disadvantages as well as their applications in differ-
ent fields are presented in separate chapters of the book. It is generally accepted
that attributes such as dimensions, purity in terms of chemical composition and par-
ticle size distribution, as well as the performance of nanostructured ceramic materi-
als are largely dependent on the approach used to fabricate them. Thus choosing a
very appropriate approach for large-scale production of ceramic nanomaterials with
desirable attributes at a low cost is very important. This book can be considered as
a valuable reference source for researchers and students and cover comprehensive
and useful information about ceramic nanomaterials based on rare earths as shown
in Fig. 1.2.

tehnyt yrityksen, jolloin vouti oli kuollut pelosta. Hän oli siis voudin
murhaaja.
voudin talolle velkaansa maksamaan.
kamalan valjakon eteen, kohottaen rukoilevasti kätensä voutia kohti,
määrätty voudin murhaajana kolmanneksi ajokkaaksi saman ikeen
alle?
"Hyvä on", virkkoi siihen
ensi kerran kiveen kilahtaa".
"En
sittenkään!" vannoi toinen. "On antaminen; pian tulen itse
hakemaan", vastasi taas kylmästi musta isäntä, "Jumala auttaa
minua".

ettei sellaisesta oltu kuultukaan.
omatunto sai nostetuksi päätänsä synnin painavan paaden alta,
jossa muka kaikki tuska lakkaa.
