Introductory Message
Welcome to English Grade 2!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to


guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For the learning facilitator:

The English Grade 2 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no
face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners
with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English Grade 2 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning
even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

I. Recognize that some words may have the same (synonyms) or opposite
(antonyms) meaning.

II. Background Information for Learners


In the previous lesson, you’ve learned about word cline. These are words with
almost the same meaning but differs in its degree of intensity. This time, you will learn
more of these words having the same or almost the same meaning, also known
as synonyms. Also, you will learn about words having opposite meaning or
antonyms.

To understand more on synonyms and antonyms, take a look at these


examples.

Synonyms Antonyms
1. big – huge, large 1. big – small, little

2. happy – glad, joyful 2. happy- sad, lonely

In the first column, the word big in number 1 is similar in meaning with huge
and large. The same is true with the word happy which also means glad and joyful.
These words are synonyms or words having the same meaning.
In the second column, the words small and little are opposite in meaning to
the word big. So, are sad and lonely to happy. They are called antonyms or words
having opposite meaning.
Studying synonyms and antonyms will help you improve your vocabulary and
will help you better understand what you are reading.
