Aptitude Session {Class-1 Summary}

Why is Aptitude Important ?

It gives a better understanding of ourselves. It reveals both our strengths, weaknesses and also highlights
our hidden talents. It helps us to develop analytical, logical thinking, decision-making, prediction and
observation behaviour. It also improves our memory, concentration & calculations, common sense and
presence of mind.
Almost all placement processes start with an Aptitude Test. Moreover, it is also important for cracking
competitive or entrance exams (such as GATE, CAT, GMAT, GRE to pursue higher studies), Govt exams
(UPSC, NDA) and even for Bank Exams.

Outcomes of completing this 10 week Session :

➢ Strong in Basics.
➢ Better approach in facing aptitude tests.
➢ Boosts self-confidence level.
➢ To know the unknown, hidden and easy strategies to solve the problems.

What do you need to do to use this session effectively ?

Have a notebook compulsorily. Do not use any calculators or gadgets. Attend all the 10 sessions,
regularly. Try to be interactive as much as you can (No matter if you were wrong,
“We all are beginners at one point”) . Ask for & clear your doubts then and there. Do your homework of
the previous session and clear any hindrances or struggles you faced at the start of the next session . Have
fun with learning... !!

Concept- I : Dividing by 5

One small trick of mental math involves a quick way to divide a number by 5. Suppose we had to
divide 630 by 5. And we're gonna do this entirely without even touching a calculator. Well,
whatever our answer is, 630 is five times too big. Notice that if we double 630, that will be ten
times too big. You see, it's usually relatively easy to double a number, even in your head.

So 630 doubled, well this, we know how to double 6. 6 doubled is 12. 30 doubled is 60. So when
we double it we're gonna get 1260. Well that's ten times too big now, so all we're gonna do is
divide by 10, and of course that's the easiest thing in the world, because we just remove a 0, 126.

We divided by 10. So that is 630 divided by 5. That's a very easy way to get it. When we need to
divide by 5, we can double N and then divide the doubled number by 10. And in fact, we don't
even need to do things in that order we can do them either order.

We could divide by ten first and then double or we could double first and divide by ten,
whichever seems easier. So, pause the video, practice dividing that by five in your head. Okay, so
I'm gonna choose to double it first because then i'll get something that is divisible by ten. So of
course, 200 doubled is 400, and 35 doubled is 70.

So when that's doubled it's 470. And then when we divide by 10 we just remove a 0, 47. So 235
divided by 5 is 47. Here's another one. Divide 1140 by 5. Pause the video and do this in your
head.

Okay. Here what I'm gonna choose to do first is because it's divisible by 10 already I'm just
gonna divide by 10, just to get a smaller number. So I divide this by 10 and I get 114. Now I'm
gonna double. Well, 100 doubled is 200, 14 doubled is 28.

So it's gonna be 228, and that is the answer. 1140 divided by 5 is 228, very easy to do this in your
head without even touching a calculator. To divide any number by 5, we can simply double it and
divide it by ten. We don't even have to do the steps in that order. We can either divide by ten first
or double it.

We just have to do those two simple steps in our head.

Q1. Divide 630 by 5. Q2. Divide 235 by 5

Ans : ● 630 / 5 = Ans : ● 235 / 5 =

● ( 630 x 2 ) / ( 5 x 2 ) ●( 235 x 2) / ( 5 x2 )
● 1260 / 10 ● 470 / 70
● 126 ● 47
Strategy for N/5 :

➔ Double N
➔ Divide this by 10

Concept-2 : Doubling and Halving

Q. Multiply 16 and 35. Q2. Multiply 84 and 15. Q. Multiply 260 with 15.

Ans : 16 * 35 = Ans : 84 * 15 = Ans : 260 * 15 =

● 8 * 2* 35 ● 42 * 2 * 50 ● 130 * 2 * 15
● 8* (2* 35) ● 42* (2 * 50) ● 130 * 30
● 8 * 70 ● 42 * 100 ● 3900
● 560 ● 4200

Strategy for multiplication of two large numbers :

➔ Half one factor (ends in 5)

➔ Double one factor (even)

Concept-3 : Squaring Shortcuts

Multiples of 10
●10^2 = 100
●20^2 = 400
●80^2 = ( 8^2 ) ( 0^2 ) = ( 64 ) ( 00 ) = 6400

Odd Multiples of 5
●5^2 = 25
●The right 2 digits always 25
●First digits got by [ n x ( n+1 ) ]
●35^2 = ( )25 = ( 3 x 4 )25 = 1225

Neighbouring Squares
●Know n^2, need (n+1)^2
●(n+1)^2 = (n^2) + n + (n+1)
●Why ?
●7^2 is 49 which is 7 7s
●49+7 = 56 which is 8 7s or 8 7s
●56+8 = 64 which is 8 8s

Concept-4 Number sense :

➔ Don’t have Intuitions for Math..... Practice a lot !!
➔ Proceed with open-minded curiosity
➔ No specific rules
➔ Familiarity with Patterns
