LEARNING PLAN

Subject Area/Level: SCIENCE 8 Date: NOVEMBER 27, 2023 – DECEMBER 1, 2023 Week No. 7
Unit Topic: HEAT & TEMPERATURE Quarter No. 2

Stage I – Desired Results

Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of heat and temperature and the effects of heat on the body.
Performance Standard:
The learners should be able to build an effective ablative heat shield.
Essential Understanding:
Learning that an energy that transfers from a hot body to a cold body. Temperature is a measure of the
average KE of a body.
Essential Questions:
1. What is heat?
2. How does heat relate to energy?
3. How heat is measured?
4. How is temperature determined?
Learning Competencies:
The learners…
 Differentiate heat from temperature at the molecular level.
Learning Target:
I can…
 differentiate between heat and temperature at the molecular level,
 understand the kinetic theory of matter and how it relates to heat and temperature; and
 explain the transfer of thermal energy through conduction, convection, and radiation.

Stage II – Evidence of Learning

The students will reflect on how understanding the molecular level of heat and temperature can help them
in daily life.

Stage III – Learning Plan

A. Explore
Day 1
1. Begin with a discussion on common experiences with heat and temperature. Ask students to
share examples of when they felt something was hot or cold.
2. Introduce the terms "heat" and "temperature" and ask students if they think they are the same
or different. Record their responses on the whiteboard.
3. Explain the molecular kinetic theory, emphasizing that all matter is made up of tiny particles
(atoms or molecules) that are constantly in motion.
4. Discuss how the motion of these particles relates to temperature. The faster the particles move,
the higher the temperature.

Day 2
Activity 1: Conduction

1. Show students a metal rod and explain that you will demonstrate conduction, the transfer of
heat through direct contact.
2. Heat one end of the metal rod and ask students to predict what will happen to the other end.
Use thermometers to measure temperature changes along the rod.
3. Discuss how the particles in the rod transfer kinetic energy by colliding with neighboring
particles.

Activity 2: Convection
1. Fill plastic cups with hot water and place a few ice cubes on top. Explain that you will
demonstrate convection, the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids.
2. Observe and discuss how the hot water rises and the cold-water sinks, creating a convection
current.

Day 3
Activity 3: Radiation
1. Set up a heat lamp or heat source and explain that you will demonstrate radiation, the transfer
of heat through electromagnetic waves.
2. Use safety goggles and observe how objects placed under the heat source warm up without
direct contact.

B. FIRM UP
Day 4
1. Discuss real-world examples of conduction, convection, and radiation.
2. Have students reflect on how understanding the molecular level of heat and temperature can
help them in daily life.

C. DEEPEN
Day 5
1. Summarize the key concepts of heat and temperature.
2. Observations during hands-on activities.
3. Summative assessment through a short quiz or written reflections on the key concepts learned.
IV. ASSESSMENT
1. Formative
2. Summative
