PART 4 – Independent Learning/Discussion

A. You Have the Final Say and Think-Pair-Share

Congratulations! You are on the right track now. After processing the different
qualities of a good teacher and the types of teaching styles, listed below are some
questions for reflections. This activity which we call as You Have the Final Say
expects you to ponder on the following given questions. You are given 5 minutes
to answer the questions, then find a partner to share your insights. Ready? Start!

My Reflections/ Insights:

1. Which trait of the teacher is more important – commitment or

competence? Why?

Effective teaching requires a delicate balance between commitment and competence,

each playing a crucial role in shaping a positive learning environment. A committed
teacher fosters strong relationships with students, promoting a supportive atmosphere
and demonstrating consistency in efforts. This dedication drives motivation and
inspiration, instilling a love for learning. On the other hand, competence ensures the
delivery of high-quality instruction, with teachers equipped to adapt to diverse learning
styles and challenges. Professionalism and credibility are associated with
competence, contributing to a positive image.

In an ideal scenario, both commitment and competence are indispensable. However,

their relative importance can vary based on educational contexts and student needs.
Primary education often emphasizes commitment, focusing on building positive
relationships, while higher education or specialized subjects may prioritize
competence for a deeper understanding of complex topics. Ultimately, a teacher who
seamlessly combines commitment and competence is most effective, as dedication,
coupled with continuous improvement in skills and knowledge, creates a profound and
positive impact on students' learning experiences.

2. Which is more important – personal or professional attributes of the teacher?

Why?

Effective teaching relies on a harmonious blend of personal and professional

attributes, with their significance varying based on the context. Personal qualities like
empathy, communication, and passion establish a positive learning environment,
fostering stronger student connections and enhancing engagement. On the
professional front, subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and classroom management
play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality education. A teacher's expertise directly
influences their ability to effectively convey information.

Achieving a balance between personal and professional attributes is essential.

Exceptional professional qualifications may weaken in connecting with students if
personal attributes are lacking. Similarly, a highly personable teacher may struggle in
content delivery without adequate professional expertise.

The interaction between personal and professional attributes is essential. A well-

rounded teacher integrates both aspects, cultivating an environment where students
not only comprehend the material but also feel motivated, supported, and inspired to
learn.

2. According to Karl Menninger, “what a teacher is, is more important that

what he/she teaches”. Agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Karl Menninger's idea emphasizes how a teacher's personality and behavior can
strongly influence students. It's not just about what they teach, but how they teach it
that impacts students' attitudes and values. A teacher who is honest, caring, and
excited about teaching creates a positive learning environment. On the other hand, a
teacher lacking these qualities may hinder students' growth, no matter the subject.

Personally, when I was in high school, I also experienced that. One of my teachers do
not know how to interact with us. That teacher teaches straight forward and do not
explain to students in more simpler ways

Agreeing with Menninger means valuing positive qualities in teachers, recognizing

their important role as mentors. When teachers show qualities like patience, respect,
and authenticity, students trust and feel motivated to learn, promoting both academic
and personal growth.

Some argue that the subject matters a teacher teaches is most important, especially
in technical fields. While expertise is vital, a great teacher is defined by a combination
of knowledge and good communication and people skills.

In summary, what a teacher teaches is important, but how they teach it and their
character significantly shape the learning experience. Menninger's idea is worth
considering.
