Adding Integers with Different Signs:

• If the positive addend has a bigger absolute value, simply do subtraction.
Example: 7 + ( −4 ) = ?
7−4 =3
• If the negative addend has a bigger absolute value,
Step 1: Take the absolute value of the negative addend then subtract
the positive number.
Step 2: The sign of the sum is the sign of the number with the bigger
absolute value.

Example: ( −8 ) + 2 = ?
First, we do Step 1:
| − 8| − 2 = 8 − 2 = 6

Then, we do Step 2: Since (−8) has the bigger absolute value, the
sum will have a negative sign. Therefore,
( −8 ) + 2 = −/
Adding Negative Integers:
To add negative integers, add their absolute values and use the
negative sign in the answer.
Example: Add ( −4 ) + (−6 )
= −( |−4| + | − 6| )
= −( 4 + 6 )
= −01

Exercises: Add the following.

a) 11 + ( −6 ) = __________
b) (−40) + 6 = __________
c) (−24 ) + ( −12 ) = __________
