Hand stitches have many uses. Before the sewing machine, all garments
were made by hand. Knowing and understanding which right stitch to use is
essential to the garment’s appearance as well as its function.
Here are the basic hand stitches:
1. Basting – a set of running stitches used to hold fabric temporarily in place,
until permanently stitched.
2. Running stitch - an in-and-out even stitch. It is very closely related to an
even basting stitch, but stitches are smaller and usually permanent.
It is used for easing and gathering sleeves.
3. Backstitch - a very strong, secure stitch that looks like a machine stitch.
This is useful for seams that are ripped and hold fabric pieces
together firmly.
4. Slipstitch - an invisible yet secure stitch used for bindings, closing the
lining, placing the applique, or closing stuffed sewing projects.
5. Overcast – basically a whip stitch that used to finish raw edges to prevent
raveling.
6. Catch stitch- a stitch that is useful for front-facing fabrics and hemming-
lined garments.
7. Cross stitch- a stitch that produces a tiled pattern or design using tiny
crosses. It is used for designing tablecloths, table linens, and also
for wall decoration.
8. Blanket stitch- useful for finishing the edges of blankets or for making
buttonholes.
Exercises:
A. As a dressmaker, what stitch will you use if you do not want the edges of
your clothes to ravel?
B. If you want a strong stitch for your garments, what kind of stitch will you
use? Why?
