Let us start high school math with a simple but very important concept
used in high school and college math, and by mathematicians. This concept is
the set.
What is a set?
A set is a well-defined collection of objects. Each object of the set is
called a member or an element of a set.
A set is well-defined if we can tell which objects belong to the set and
which objects do not belong to the set.
We normally use a capital letter to name a set.
Examples of sets:
(a) The set H of provinces of Central Visayas Region

(b) The set W of days of the week

Elements of a set:
The symbol is the Greek letter epsilon. It is used to tell if something
is an element of a set.
Example: Bohol H since Bohol is an element of set H.
If something is not an element of a set, we use the symbol to mean

Example: Leyte H since Leyte is not an element of set H.

Exercises: Which sets are well-defined? For the well-defined sets, write
the elements of the set. If the set is not well-defined, give the reason why.
