3. Tell us your experience studying in college and how it helped you in your career.

My name is Raja Mariah. I am SKM and C&G Diploma holder in Culinary Arts at SSIC,
Batch 2013/2014. During my study, practical learning was more than theoretical
learning. So basically, I can practice more cooking. I can really cook for family and
friends. Then, I started my business by selling cakes and desserts online.
To tell about the experience when studying at SSIC, the final exam time is the most
unforgettable. We students were given the task of serving fine dining to VIP guests
who were present to evaluate our food. I oversaw the desserts department. We took a
week to prepare for the event, from buying goods, costing, mise en place until the
day of assessment. It was the best experience for us students to feel like working in
a real fine dining kitchen, something like Gordon Ramsay’s cooking show (Kitchen
Nightmares).
Then, I did my internship at Holiday Inn Glenmarie for 6 months. I got intern
experience in 6 types of kitchens which are Malay, Chinese, Garde Manger, Western,
Bakery & Confectionery and Hot Kitchen (Banquet).
After finishing my studies, I got a job at a cake shop in Shah Alam. I worked there for
a year and a half, and because my father was sick and there was no one to take care
of him at home, I had to stop working. While taking care of my father, I started a
home-based online business by selling cakes, desserts, and western foods for 2
years.
Long story short, with my mother and family’s help, I got the courage to open a cake
shop. God willing, the shop is named Pastryfeel has been operating for 5 years.
SSIC is the starting point for me to continue my interest in baking and cooking. Now,
I can make my own products in my own shop.

4. Words of wisdom to current and future students of SSIC.
