COFIMCO’s procedure for blade load testing has been widely discussed in May 2014 with
Respected Dr. S.C. Lakkad,
Ex - Professor, Department of Aerodynamics, Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai
mkasthana@ntpc.co.in
The test approach was explained and accepted. Below the load calculation details.
The Aerod axial force (AF) stated in the data sheet is only one component of the loads acting on the
blade. Other relevant loads are:
a) Blade own weight (W)
b) Centrifugal Force (CF)
Please refer to the below sketch where:
W – blade own weight
AF – aerodynamic axial force
Wa - weight of accessories (tip cap and balancing weight)
CFb – blade centrifugal force
CFa – centrifugal force of the accessories
,αo – blade root downward angle (pre-cone)
The scope of the test is to replicate the bending moment at the root (RBM) where it is at its maximum
level. It must be considered that the working principle of the flexible type of blade is to take advantage
of the CF to relieve the vertical loads effect: this is the reason why
A) The blade root is not horizontal but at an angle αo pointing down
B) The blade shaft is flexible
During the test, the blade own weight is naturally acting on the blade, therefore no means are required
to replicate it and only the weight and CF must be replicated. The CF is the Blade Failure Load stated
in the data sheet BFL = 18645 N.
Since the CF has its application point at 155.64 mm from the horizontal, and assuming as positive
moments acting clockwise, its relieving moment is: CFBM = -2902.0 Nm.
The AF bending moment at the root is AFBM = +3745.45 Nm. The total RBM is then
The above RBM value leads to 40.5 Kg of total load acting on the blade according to the triangular
distribution typical of the aerodynamic load of a rotating blade, see Fig. 4.1 and Table 4.1 of
