Types of Sentences- REVISION

Exercise 1:
Identify the type of sentence (Statement, Command, Exclamation, Question) for each of the
following sentences:
1.1 Remember to keep it raised, to reduce the swelling.
1.2 When will the plaster cast come off?
1.3 I am so sorry to hear about your broken leg.
1.4 That must have been so sore!

*Often times we are prone to respond to questions with a phrase however


when answering questions in a written form it is important to answer in full
sentences.

Exercise 2:
Identify the adjectival phrases in these sentences.
2.1 The carpet at the door is quite dirty.
2.2 People with visual disabilities can read Braille script.

2.3 I prefer the dress in a larger size.

Exercise 3:
Identify the adverbial phrases in these sentences.
3.1 Before leaving for school, I pack lunch.
3.2 The bus was late, unluckily for me.
3.3 I almost never drink coffee.
3.4 The judge delivered her verdict in a firm voice.

Exercise 4:
Identify whether the underlined adverbial phrases in the following sentences tell how, where
or when the action happens.
4.1 The eagle flew in a silent circle.
4.2 In two years I will finish school.
4.3 Please put the paper in the recycling bin.
4.4 The house was built underneath the tree for shade.

Exercise 5:
Choose the correct noun phrases from the box to complete the sentences below.

Exercise 6:
Join these sentences below to make compound sentences. (Choose the best conjunction to
use.)
6.1 I heard a crash of thunder. I saw lightning a minute later.
6.2 This holiday we went to the Kruger Park to see wildlife. We went to Durban to the beach.
6.3 There was a power failure last night. My electric alarm clock did not go off.

Exercise 7:
Rewrite these incomplete sentences as complete sentences by adding a main(independent)
clause.
7.1 As long as you come with me.
7.2 Because it’s against the school rules.
7.3 which I thought was in Namibia.

Exercise 8:
Identify whether these sentences are simple, compound, or complex.
8.1 The young woman knocked a man over and stole his wallet.
8.2 The judge considered all the evidence.
8.3 The judge said that although she was guilty, she was a first-time offender.
8.4 So the judge gave her a suspended sentence of 12 months and ordered her to attend a
rehabilitation programme.

Exercise 9:
Add clauses from column B to complete the main(independent) clauses in column A, to
form complex sentences.

Exercise 10:
Join these sentence pairs to form compound sentences. (Choose the correct punctuation or

10.2 You should not be late for school. You should not be absent without permission.
