Usually this is set up already, but you can customize your notification settings by opening up the Instagram app
on your phone and going to your settings. Go to your profile (by tapping ) and then tap the icon.
You will see a screen with several settings you can switch on and off. The most important ones you want to have
switched to From Everyone are: Comments, New Followers and Photos of You.
You will now receive a notification on your phone every time someone follows you, comments on your photos or
tags you in a picture.
Tip: Instagram won’t notify you when people use your hashtag. To find out if people are posting
using your hashtag, you can use the Instagram search function or use Iconosquare for an over-
view of images with your hashtag. You can then comment on these pictures manually. Alterna-
tively, you can use Socialphotosapp to email you every time someone posts with your hashtag.
To send a direct message, tap the icon in the top right corner on your home screen in Instagram. This is your
inbox. Here you can view direct messages you’ve sent and received. From there, tap the icon to create a new
direct message. Upload and edit your photo like any normal Instagram upload.
Insert a message and select the person you want to send your message to next to the To section.
There are two ways of tagging someone. You can tag someone in the text below your image, or you can tag
someone in the image itself.
To tag someone in the text of the image, simply type in @ followed by their Instagram handle (for example @
asktypsy). Once you start typing, Instagram will give suggestions on the correct person. After you’ve posted the
image, the @name will show up as a tag.
A new screen with your image appears. Tap the section of the image you want the tag to appear and type in their
Instagram handle. Once your image is posted, the tag will show up in the image.
