Lesson 1.

Describing
Matter
Grade: 9th
Subject: Science
Teacher: Mrs. Candanedo
Objective
• Learn the definition of matter.
• Mention the states of matter and some examples
of each one.
• Understand the physical and chemical properties
of matter.
What Properties Describe Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Hard or soft, hot or cold, liquid, solid or gas.

Chemistry is the study of matter and how

matter changes.
Substances
• In chemistry, is a single kind of matter that is
pure.
• Example 1: table salt has the same
composition and properties whether it
comes from seawater or a salt mine.
• Example 2: Pure water is always the same,
whether it comes from a glacier or from a
geyser.

How are matter and substances
related?
• Matter is anything that has mass and takes up
space. Substances are types of matter that are
pure.

Properties of Matter

Physical property: Chemical property:

Rusty Metal Chain

Mark all the objects that are
flexible.
What do all of the flexible
❑Aluminium can
objects have in common?
❑Copper sheeting They are all made of
metals.
❑Brick house
What physical property makes metal pots
❑Glass window good for cooking?
The ability to conduct heat.
❑Silver spoon

❑Wood drumstick
Frozen Fruit Bar
• Describe three properties of a frozen
fruit bar, including its state of matter.
• 1. Cold
• 2. Smooth
• 3. Solid
• Will any of these properties change
after a couple of hours in the sun?
Explain
• Yes, it will not be solid or cold anymore.
It Will be liquid and warm.
Charcoal briquettes
• How do you know that flammability
is a chemical property?
• The substance carbon dioxide and
water are formed from burning.

What Is Matter
Made Of?
• Elements: Substance that
can not be broken into any
others substances by
chemical or physical means.
• Represented by one or two
letter symbols
Examples: C for carbon, O
of oxygen and Ca for
calcium.
What Is Matter Made Of?
• Atoms: Basic particle from which elements are
made.
• Nucleus: Positively charged center.
• “Cloud”: Negative charge surrounding the
nucleus.
What Is Matter Made
Of?
• Molecules: Group of two or
more atoms held together by
chemical bonds.
• A chemical bond is a force of
attraction between two atoms.
What Is Matter
Made Of?
• Compounds: Substance
made of two or more
elements that are chemically
combined in a set ratio.
• Represented by chemical
formula.

What Are Two Types of
Mixtures
• Mixture: is made of two or more
substances that are together in the same
place, but their atoms are not chemically
bonded.
• Heterogeneous mixtures: You can see
the different parts and they can easily be
separated out. Example: salad
• Homogeneous mixtures: you can´t see
the different parts. Example: air
Separating mixture
• Magnetic attraction: Iron objects can be separated from a
mixture using a magnet.
Separating mixture
• Filtration: Solids can be separated from liquids by puting the
mixture through a filter.
Separating mixture
• Evaporation: when left in the open air, iquids solutions can
change to gas, leaving solid components behind.
Separating mixture
• Distillation: Liquids can be separated from each other by
heating them up to the temperature at which one of the liquids
boils. The liquid boils into a gas. Then the gas cools, forming the
separated liquid.
