INTRODUCTION

In this presentation, I will look at my personal stories to discover the theme of resilience. We
hope to uncover patterns of resilience, adaptation, and growth in the face of adversity
through various experiences. By delving into particular experiences, we highlight the
fundamental human ability to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger. This theme
journey encourages thought on the complex nature of resilience and its significant impact
on my personal change and empowerment.

MY 10? THEMES
This research illuminates my journey as a leader via ten thematic lenses, digging into
the essence of who I am, what I value, and the profound realizations gained from
life's tapestry. These themes reveal the complexities of my leadership identity,
including the core ideals that govern my path and the transforming insights gained
from a lifetime of experiences. This voyage delves into the depths of self-discovery
through introspection, revealing significant truths about the person I have become
as a result of my actions and decisions.
THEME 1: SPEAKING UP FOR
WHAT’S RIGHT
• Theme Statement: Speaking up for what is right, whether it is for myself, for friends, family, or
in my leadership role, I will never be afraid to stand up for what I care for.

• Supporting Data:
• My coworkers are not just partners to me, they are also my second family. If another coworker or a
customer is not treating them correctly, I will make sure to always stand up for them (DISC).
• As a Shift Supervisor at Starbucks, when I see protocols being broken, or there is something I do not
agree with, I immediately speak with my manager about the fact to make sure that things are
dealt with correctly (Interview Project).
• When I first applied for my Shift Supervisor position and I did not get the role, I stood up for myself
because I was not fairly interviewed compared to the other interviewees. I spoke with my District
Manager about it to make sure that things were handled correctly afterward (Self Assessment
essay).
• Based on my Indigo Assessment, I make sure to take initiative to make sure that things are done
correctly, but also to take initiative to make sure that each of my partners at work are heard and
taken care of as well (INDIGO).
• I scored highest on Dominance on my DISC assessment, and when speaking for what is right (no
matter the circumstance), my dominance in that conversation is very present because I always
make sure that I am heard by whomever I am talking to (INDIGO/DISC).
THEME 1: FAMILY CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• Based on all my past work and assessments through other classes as well as
this one, I do not believe that there is any contradictory evidence to this.
Although I am always willing to see another person's perspective, I will also
make sure to always speak about what is right.

• Reflection
• This was really interesting to find throughout my work because although it was
always something I unconsciously knew about myself, finding proof that that is
one of my main themes makes me feel proud to be able to speak up. I feel
that a lot of people can have a hard time speaking up when they see
something wrong happening, but I am never afraid to stand up and speak
when there is something that either is wrong or that I feel is not morally correct.
THEME 2: INTROVERSION
• Theme Statement: Although I love working in groups and working as a team, I will never turn down working alone,
or even being alone.

• Supporting Data:
• On my Jung Typology Test, I scored highest with a 19% on Introversion. Although I love the team projects I have
been in and the people I have worked with, there are also projects I have done better on when I have
worked alone (Humanmetrics Jung Typology Test).
• I tend to guess what a person is going to say next rather than fully listening to them sometimes, and although it
is something that I continue to do, it is a trait I am working on stopping (Listening Assessment).
• With having a high Dominance score in my DISC assessment, when people first meet me they tend to see me
as intimidating at first, and although I understand that now, I think it is why I am more introverted than
extroverted because of the amount of times people have been visibly intimidated by me (Indigo Assessment).
• Due to my upbringing, I know how to stand up for myself and what is right, and when someone disrespects
me, I will make sure that they know that they have and communicate with them. This can be very intimidating
for most people which is the cause of me working alone a lot, I think (Cultural Identity Essay).
• Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned the beauty of being along, but also working alone since I started
doing online college then. When learning the beauty of online college, I became very isolated and loved
working alone rather than working with others because I found that is was easier for my brain to comprehend
rather than constantly communicating with others (Learning Styles Assessment).
THEME 2: INTROVERSION CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• I honestly feel that there is a lot of contradictory evidence to this based on my
current employment, but also for the fact that I love working in groups as well. I
love hearing new ideas that I did not think of and new perspectives because it
opens our minds more.

• Reflection
• This theme did not surprise me too much, but it was also really interesting to see
throughout my work. My love for being alone or working alone I do not think will
ever go away, but I think that throughout my years at ASU, my love for
groupwork is also growing.
THEME 3: FAMILY OVER EVERYTHING
• Theme Statement: It does not matter the time of day, where I am in the world, or what is happening in my
personal life, my family will always come first. My cultural upbringing and where I am from have taught me
nothing but family, and family is everything.

• Supporting Data:
• Ever since I can remember, my mother and father always taught me that family is first, because even
when you think you are alone, someone in your family no matter who it is will hold you up, even when
you feel like you are falling (Cultural Identity Essay).
• I am a very individualistic person, but because of my upbringing as well, I was taught to care for each
person because we never know what is going on in there life behind the curtains. Although we may
feel we know everything about our family members as well, there are still some uncertainties that we
do not know about, and need to treat them with love and care like we would anyone else (Self
Assessment).
• I have driven home for two hours in the middle of the night for my family because they needed me
there. Even then and now I would do it again because when family needs family, we always make
sure that we are there for each other (Cultural Identity Essay).
• During my personal interviews with my friends, each one of them has talked about how genuine, kind,
and caring I am. I would not be those things today without my family, and I always want to make sure
that my family gets that same genuineness, kindness, and courage from me because they are the
ones who taught it to me (Interview Project).
THEME 3: FAMILY OVER EVERYTHING
CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• Although it might seem that there is contradictory evidence because I do not
see my family as much as I wish anymore, my assessments and essay will show
that my family will always come before anything in my life no matter what is
going on. Family will always be there.

• Reflection
• Seeing that my family comes first even throughout my work was really eye-
opening to me because although I have always known that, it was reassuring to
see it. Knowing my love for my family is being brought to light even through my
work makes my heart grow even fonder.
THEME 4: ALWAYS LISTENING
• Theme Statement: I am one to listen to everybody, no matter who they are.

• Supporting Data:
• I attentively listen to others, demonstrating genuine interest through eye contact, nodding,
and verbal affirmations (Listening Assessment).
• I aim to understand perspectives by empathizing with feelings and accepting different
points of view without passing judgment (INDIGO).
• I approach conversations with an open mind, appreciating the diversity of perspectives
and eager to learn from others' experiences (DISC).
• I try to use reflective listening skills, such as paraphrasing and summarizing, to ensure
accurate comprehension and affirm speakers' emotions (DISC).
• I foster a secure and supportive environment in which coworkers feel heard and
appreciated, while gently enabling them to fully express themselves (Cultural Identity
essay).
• I follow up on conversations by offering support and encouragement, exhibiting a genuine
desire to create meaningful connections and understanding (Cultural Identity Essay).
THEME 4: ALWAYS LISTENING
CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
I am confident that there is no evidence to invalidate my ability to listen.
Personal interviews, bosses, and colleagues have all confirmed my ability to do this
task. I've repeatedly received compliments on my attentive and compassionate
listening approach, which promotes trust, understanding, and effective
communication in both professional and personal situations. This collective
validation reinforces my dedication to active participation and sympathetic
understanding, ensuring that people feel truly heard, respected, and supported.
THEME 5: PLANNING AND
ORGANIZATION
• Theme Statement: Having my days planned and especially organized is one of the most important aspects in my
life, Throughout my workdays, and in the beginning of each week, I prioritize what tasks need to get done first,
and to ensure they get done each one of my days is organized differently.

• Supporting Data:
• I successfully manage my studies and Starbucks responsibilities, precisely structuring schedules to
maximize efficiency and meet deadlines (INDIGO).
• I keep comprehensive records, ensuring that tasks, assignments, and shifts are meticulously planned
and carried out with precision (INDIGO).
• In both academic and professional settings, I effectively select activities based on urgency and
importance, optimizing efficiency and reducing stress (INDIGO).
• I show flexibility in planning by seamlessly modifying schedules and methods to accommodate
unanticipated changes or problems (Self-Assessment Essay).
• As a shift supervisor, I coordinate team schedules and responsibilities to ensure smooth operations and
optimal resource use across shifts (Interview Project).
• Long-term goals are incorporated into my planning process, with milestones and tactics developed to
attain scholastic and career objectives while keeping a balanced lifestyle (INDIGO).
THEME 5: PLANNING AND
ORGANIZATION CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• Based on some of the personal and professional interviews I conducted for this
course, there could be some contradictions to my planning and organization
some weeks based on my procrastination habits.

• Reflection
• I think that this was really interesting to see from my own perspective and
bringing it to my attention was even more eye-opening. Knowing that I find
comfort in planning and organization makes a lot of sense for my day-to-day life
and activities, especially for my work environment at Starbucks as well.
THEME 6: COMFORT IN THE
UNKNOWN
• Theme Statement: With having a rough upbringing in my childhood, I have learned to find comfort
in not knowing. The uncertainty of life can be confusing and uncomfortable, but in my personal
experience, the discomfort is very comfortable.

• Supporting Data:
• I see the unknown as a chance for growth and discovery, and I accept uncertainty as a
normal part of life's journey (Cultural Identity Essay).
• In the face of uncertainty, I stay adaptable and open-minded, eagerly seeking out new
experiences and ideas (Self-Assessment Essay).
• I maintain a positive attitude toward the unknown, viewing it as an opportunity for
adventure and personal growth rather than a source of fear or concern Cultural Identity
Essay).
• I am confident in my ability to overcome uncertainty, believing that obstacles and
setbacks will eventually lead to useful lessons and opportunities (Cultural Identity Essay).
• I actively seek out chances in the unknown, addressing new situations with optimism,
eagerness to learn, and adaptability (Listening Assessment).
• To find comfort and strength in the face of uncertainty, I practice mindfulness and self-
awareness, focusing on the present moment (Learning Styles Assessment).
THEME 6: COMFORT IN THE
UNKNOWN CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• Looking through my assessments and conducted interviews, I again do not feel
that there is any contradictory evidence. I have always believed that things
happen for a reason in life, whether it is a lesson or making room to personally
grow. With the amount of hardships I have been through in life, it only makes
sense to come to terms with the uncertainty life can bring, and accepting that
uncertainty can make it easier as those circumstances come and go.

• Reflection
• I think that this theme really brought to light personally, about how comfortable I
am in every aspect of my life. Knowing constantly that no matter what I will
make it through whatever life brings is a certainty within itself.
THEME 7: STRENGTH IN LEADING
• Theme Statement: When supporting my team at Starbucks, I always make sure my team is in a place that they
are comfortable, but also in a place where I know we will work well to get through the busiest points of the day.

• Supporting Data:
• I consistently ensure clear communication among team members, fostering a collaborative
environment where everyone understands their roles and responsibilities (Interview Project).
• I demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations, whether it's a rush hour or
unexpected staffing issues, ensuring smooth operations during busy shifts (Interview Project).
• As a shift supervisor, I adeptly handle any challenges that arise, from customer complaints to
equipment malfunctions, finding quick and effective solutions to keep operations running smoothly
(Self-Assessments Essay).
• I empower my team by delegating tasks effectively, recognizing individual strengths, and providing
constructive feedback, fostering a motivated and engaged staff (Interview Project).
• I prioritize customer satisfaction by ensuring that drinks are prepared correctly, maintaining cleanliness,
and creating a welcoming atmosphere, leading to positive feedback and repeat business (INDIGO).
• I lead by example, consistently demonstrating a strong work ethic, professionalism, and dedication to
Starbucks standards, inspiring my team to do the same (INDIGO).
THEME 7: STRENGTH IN LEADING
CON’T
• Contradictory Evidence (if there is none then a brief explanation why feel
this is so)
• Based on my professional interviews conducted for this course, I do not feel that
there is any contradictory evidence.

• Reflection
• Looking back at my interviews and through multiple assessments, it is becoming
clear to me that one of my strengths is staying strong solely for my team. I would
rather take on the stresses of the work day, and deal with my own for the day,
rather than have them be uncomfortable and stressed at work as well.
MY PERSONAL VISION STATEMENT
In my path, I've come to accept the truth: everything will be okay. With
resilience and hope, I see a life in which I find strength in uncertainty.
Grounded in trust, I empower myself to overcome problems with confidence
and hope, knowing that each hurdle is a chance for growth and resilience.

Reflection: To encapture my vision statement, I thought of something I always

tell myself; it will be okay. Whatever happens in life happens for a reason, and
each bump in the road, it can only create more resilience and strength within
oneself. Learning how to do my best work in online college, as well as working
a full-time job has taught me more life lessons than I could ever be thankful for.
MY PERSONAL MISSION
STATEMENT
To always stay genuine to myself. I promise to live genuinely, to honor my
ideals, and to accept both my talents and flaws. Through my own self-
discovery journey, I hope to inspire others to do the same, generating true
connections and valuable contributions.

Reflection: When creating my personal mission statement, I thought of what I

would want to tell myself two years ago when I was afraid of living life to the
fullest and afraid of being alone. I thought about the fact that I have had to
fight for myself in each situation, and for others in my life who I knew would not
fight for me. Creating this mission statement made me realize and is going to
make me stay true to who I am as a person, as well as keep standing up for
myself, even if there is no one behind me to do so as well.
While not all 10 themes arose
throughout this thematic
analysis, those that did
resonated deeply with me,
providing meaningful insights
into my character and values.
They act as a mirror, reflecting
my constant commitment to
both my professional and
academic endeavors.
Whether in my full-time job or
academic pursuits, my

CONCLUSION
dedication to greatness is
unwavering. Furthermore, this
study demonstrates my
commitment to authenticity in
both my personal relationships
and as a leader. It serves as a
painful reminder of the value
of remaining true to myself, my
family, and those closest to
me. This introspective trip has
been instructive, establishing
my identity as both an
individual and a leader, as well
as reinforcing my convictions
and guiding principles.
