B. ESTABLISHING A PURPOSE rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps.
Let them understand the need to protect & conserve tropical
rainforests, coral reefs, & mangrove swamps.
Perform an activity to describe the condition of tropical rainforests, coral
reefs, and mangrove swamps.
C. Group Activity
Activity 1: Ecosystem Scrapbook
Science Skills: Observing Communication
Time Frame: 1 week
C. (EXPLORE) You Will Need:
Notebook, pen / pencil, camera / cellphone, magnifying
glass
What to do:
1.Have the learners visit a nearby ecosystem like a beach, riverbank,
farm. Let them record their observations.
2. Allow them to observe the size of the ecosystem and the conditions
surrounding it (for example, the climate, the temperature, and the cleanliness
of the surroundings)
3.Also ask them to observe the plants in the area.
4.Tell them that they can take pictures or draw the scenery if they like.
5. Let them observe if there are any animals in the area.
6. Advise them to use magnifying glass to search for insects and other small
invertebrates.
7. Ask them to take photos or draw pictures of the organisms that they find.
Questions:
a. What kind of plants live in the ecosystem you observed?
b. What kind of animals can be found in the ecosystem you observed?
c. Why do you think are these kinds of organisms found in the area?
d. Why do you think the rivers & seas are dirty/polluted? The forest
become denuded? The coral reefs are destroyed? Mangroves are
are becoming less?
e. Does it have anything to do with the climate, soil or water condi-
tions, or presence of pollutants? Why? Why not?

Activity 2- Day 2
How do your community members help prevent the further
destruction of the environment?
Coral reefs provide home for a lot of marine plants that ensures marine food
chains active and continuous. They are made up of lime stone secreted by
corals and deposited in a period of thousands to million of years. They can of
three types: fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls. The coral reefs is not
just home for hard and soft corals, but also to sponges, crustaceans, jellyfish,
sea anemones, and many others.

Some human activities that destroy the coral reef in our country are coral
reefs degradation/destruction, which threaten possible disappearance of
marine species (potential mass death).
Generalization:
1. What is the composition of ecosystem?
2. Describe tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps.
3. What are some ways of protecting and conserving the forests?
coral reefs? mangrove swamps?
4. Why balance within the ecosystem is important?
F. Assessment:
I. Match the Components of Ecosystem to its Condition.
1. Rainforests –
2. Coral reefs –
3. Mangrove swamps -
V. Select the following activities inside the box that show concerns
on the conservation of tropical rainforest, coral reefs and
mangrove swamps:
Day 2. Out of ____ learners, there are ________ who got 80% in the activity.
Day 3. Out of ____learners, there are ________ who got 80% in the activity.
Day 4. Out of _____ learners, there are ________ who got 80% in the
activity.
Day 5. Out of _____learners, there are ________ who got 80% in the
activity.

Notebook, pen / pencil, camera / cellphone, magnifying glass
III Procedure:
1. Visit a nearby ecosystem like a beach, riverbank, park or farm. If none, visit a part of your
school like garden.

Checklist
III. Procedure:
1. Distribute the checklist to the pupils about the government campaigns and projects
2. Check those in which you can participate in
3. Consolidate the result.
Here are some of the government campaigns and projects on environmental conservation and
preservation. Check those in which you can participate in.
Massive campaigns have been launched to encourage citizens to plant trees. Trees act likes sponges that
absorb excessive carbon dioxide in the air. They keep the surroundings cooler.
The Clean & Green Project aims to make the public aware of proper garbage disposal to stop or minimize
water and air pollution. It also encourages the people to plant trees in their lots.
The Sagip-Ilog is a campaign to help clean the River and restore it to its former ecological status.
Save the Earth Movement aims to conserve our forests and our endangered wildlife species. It also
campaigns against nuclear bomb testing in our oceans and the use of chloroflourocarbon, a chemical
that destroys the ozone layer.
Recycling the Garbage Project encourages people to reuse items such as paper, bottles, cans, and wrappers in
order to conserve natural resources.
Protect the Sanctuary aims to protect and conserve the special areas where our endangered plants, animals,
and marine life are taken care of.
Tree Planting encourages people to plant more trees and mangroves for the animals to live to balance the
ecosystem.
I. Problem:
Illustrate the ways in protecting and conserving coral reefs.
