ELABORATE)
1. What are the current issues faced by the rainforests,
coral reefs, and mangrove swamps in our country?
(Deforestation in rainforests, destruction of the coral reefs, and
clearing of mangrove)
0050 Lino Chatto Drive Barangay Cogon, Tagbilaran City, Bohol
Tel Nos.: (038) 412-4938; (038) 411-2544 (038) 501-7550
Telefax: (038) 501-7550 email add: deped.bohol@deped.gov.ph
Massive deforestation has brought about the destruction of the natural
habitats of our wildlife. This action leads to the extinction of some living
things. It has also caused floods and soil erosion. It has contributed to the
presence of too much materials like carbon dioxide in the environment. This
condition is harmful to living things and the environment.
Natural disturbances like storms, volcanic eruptions, and hurricanes as well
as human activities such muro- ami fishing, dynamite fishing, clearing of
mangroves for industrial purposes and consumption of the people living in
coastal communities, our mangroves are threatened. It also may greatly affect
the type of organisms and their relationships within the coral reefs.

2. What do we need to protect and conserve tropical rain-

forests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps?

Awareness about whats happening in our environment is the first step to

solve our problem regarding the current issues faced by the rainforests, coral
reefs and mangrove swamps and people should practice different strategies in
protecting and conserving
these ecosystems as well as the other ecosystems of our country.
Government and environmentalists are taking necessary actions to conserve
and protect our mangroves

Activity 2- Day 2
How do your community members help prevent the further
destruction of the environment?

(The teacher will identify and elaborate the following ways on

how to protect and conserve tropical rainforests, coral reefs
and mangrove swamps)

1. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), is

the government agency tasked to address issues related to the
environment. It also monitors and checks human activities that may
endanger our ecosystem. It issues permits to those who comply with
existing laws and regulations on logging. It is encharge of forest
conservation. It carries out reforestation programs in the country. It is
also responsible for the nationwide campaign in tree planting.
2. The DENR regulates hunting and fishing to conserve our diminishing
resources. It prohibits dynamite fishing and the use of sodium
cyanide. It establishes sanctuaries in some parts of the country in
order to protect our endangered wildlife species.
Sanctuaries are places where hunting and fishing are prohibited.
They are special areas where our endangered plants, animals, and
marine life are taken care of. They multiply there and prevent
possible extinction. Conservation is the wise use of resources
available. The harvesting or extracting such resources is being
regulated to allow them
to reproduce. Can you name some ways of controlling or preventing
harmful effects of human activities to the environment? Enumerate
some of them?

Protecting Forest, Coral Reefs, and Swamp Ecosystems:

1. Habitat Restoration
 Building a man-made fish sanctuary

 Reforestation
 Mangrove rehabilitation
 Widlife Conservation
A. Protect the Sanctuary:
1. The Calauit Game Reserve and Sanctuary in Palawan
2. Tubbataha Reefs
3. San Salvador Island Marine Reserve and Fish Sanctuary in the
Municipality of Masinloc, Zambales
4. Ursula Island Game Reserve and Bird Sanctuary at Rio Tuba,
Bataraza
5. Coron Palawan Protected Area in Coron, Palawan
6. El Nido Marine Reserve, Palawan
7. Malampaya Sound Land and Seascape Protected Area
8. Apo Reef, Occidental Mindoro

B. Support projects of the government in protecting the

wildlife ecosystem such as:
1. The Pawikan Conservation Project (Baguan Island Marine
Sanctuary)
2. The Philippine Tarsier Conservation Project (Bohol)
3. The Philippine Eagle Conservation Project (Makiling Botanical
Garden)
C. Visit captive breeding areas. Captive breeding saves
endangered species. Captive breeding is done in the zoo
or in specialized animal clinics.
D. Do not buy products made from animal parts
E. Join organizations that conduct educational campaigns
and give information on how to protect and conserve the
wildlife ecosystems.
F. Help raise funds to support projects for wildlife
conservation
Activity 3- Day 3
Why we need to protect and conserved tropical rainforests, coral reefs and
mangrove swamps?
(The teacher discuss about restoration and maintenance of the
balance of life in an ecosystem will ensure the survival of the
future. Available natural resources should be used wisely)
If all people will help and cooperate with the government in its campaign and
projects to save the environment, what do you think are the beneficial effects
of these as a whole?
These projects are concerned with restoring and keeping the balance
of nature. They are being pursued here and abroad. How can you help in
restoring and keeping the balance of nature? Infer what will happen in the
future if the ecosystem is destroyed and the balance of nature is not restored?
Activity 4- Day 4
Discuss the following ways in protecting and conserving coral reefs:

 Describe coral reef in your place?

Coral reefs provide home for a lot of marine plants that ensures marine food
chains active and continuous. They are made up of lime stone secreted by
corals and deposited in a period of thousands to million of years. They can of
three types: fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls. The coral reefs is not
just home for hard and soft corals, but also to sponges, crustaceans, jellyfish,
sea anemones, and many others.

Some human activities that destroy the coral reef in our country are coral
reefs degradation/destruction, which threaten possible disappearance of
marine species (potential mass death).

 What should we do to protect and conserve it? (Help watch the

environment: Fishing near the sanctuary is prohibited)

Sagip- Ilog Protect the Sanctuary

 Massive campaigns have been launched to encourage citizens to plant trees. Trees act likes sponges that
absorb excessive carbon dioxide in the air. They keep the surroundings cooler.
 The Clean & Green Project aims to make the public aware of proper garbage disposal to stop or minimize
water and air pollution. It also encourages the people to plant trees in their lots.
 The Sagip-Ilog is a campaign to help clean the River and restore it to its former ecological status.
 Save the Earth Movement aims to conserve our forests and our endangered wildlife species. It also
campaigns against nuclear bomb testing in our oceans and the use of chloroflourocarbon, a chemical
that destroys the ozone layer.
 Recycling the Garbage Project encourages people to reuse items such as paper, bottles, cans, and wrappers in
order to conserve natural resources.
 Protect the Sanctuary aims to protect and conserve the special areas where our endangered plants, animals,
and marine life are taken care of.
 Tree Planting encourages people to plant more trees and mangroves for the animals to live to balance the
ecosystem.
