During my practicum, I gained familiarity with the notion of a multicultural environment
and cultural competency through interactions with individuals from various
backgrounds. A culturally competent healthcare system acknowledges the significance
SF

of culture, integrates assessments of cross-cultural relations, recognizes potential

impacts of cultural differences, enhances cultural comprehension, and adapts facilities
to cater to unique cultural needs (American Hospital Association [AHA], n.d.). Cultural
competency in healthcare is crucial for addressing community healthcare needs and
R

striving to reduce disparities in race, economics, ethnicity, and social status (Pacquiao,
2018).
U

The initial step in establishing a culturally competent healthcare environment involves

self-awareness of one's cultural background and experiences, while minimizing their
influence when interacting with individuals from other cultures. Beyond this, cultural
N

competency requires an understanding of and respect for other cultures, as well as

responding to patients in manners consistent with their cultural norms (Pacquiao,
2018).

Culture significantly shapes how clients develop and express emotional distress and
how therapeutic interventions address such distress. Multicultural care in practice
focuses on adapting care processes to meet the cultural needs of patients, utilizing
cultural competency to foster trust and rapport with patients. Achieving cultural
competency entails a commitment to understanding and being mindful of the client's
attitudes
