the world. But the number one thing that usually stops people from travelling is lack of money.

Cultural competence
Working and living in a global society requires the ability to create interactions and
relationships with people who are different from us. It is critical to know how to assess our
cultural competence and evaluate our own cultural behaviours.
What is cultural intelligence?
5 Cultural intelligence is the ability to interpret someone’s behaviour in the way his / her
fellow countrymen would.
What is cultural competence?
Cultural competence is the awareness¹ towards cultural differences and also the ability to
adapt to other cultural environments. In short, it’s understanding how unknown cultural
10 environments influences our thoughts and behaviours.
Why do we need to develop cultural competence?
Developing cultural competence helps us understand, communicate with, and effectively
interact with people across cultures. It gives us the ability to compare different cultures with
our own and better understand the differences.
15 How do we develop cultural competence?
We need to develop skills to better engage with people from different cultures. We can
adopt some strategies to practise effective communication in intercultural situations. Some
examples are: practice openness; demonstrate acceptance of difference; be flexible;
demonstrate humility² through suspension of judgement; show ability to learn; be sensitive to
20 others by appreciating cultural differences; show a spirit of adventure by showing curiosity and
seeing opportunities in different situations; use sense of humour and laugh at ourselves.
