1.2 Concepts Explanation:

a) Active and Passive Voice: Active Voice: In active voice, the subject performs the action.
Example: John wrote a letter. Passive Voice: In passive voice, the subject receives the action.
Example: The letter was written by John.

b) Phonetics and Phonology: Phonetics: The study of human speech sounds, including their
production, perception, and transcription. Example: /p/ and /b/ are phonetically different sounds
because they are produced differently. Phonology: The systematic organization of speech sounds
in a particular language. Example: In English, /p/ and /b/ are phonologically distinct because they
represent different sounds that can change the meaning of a word (e.g. pat vs bat).

c) Voiced and Voiceless Sounds: Voiced Sounds: Sounds that are produced with vibration of the
vocal cords. Example: /z/ and /v/ are voiced sounds. Voiceless Sounds: Sounds that are produced
without vibration of the vocal cords. Example: /s/ and /f/ are voiceless sounds.
