Summer Vacation is the time that we all eagerly wait for. We all make plans to enjoy, relax
and to empower ourselves during these gala days. This summer vacation, the Holiday
Homework designed by the school, is a medium for the students to achieve the motto of “Fun
and Learn”. The activity-based assignments will foster curiosity, develop creativity, enhance
knowledge and instill the joy of learning among the students.
1. Create a Shape Poem on your own on a thick based A4 size sheet. You have to choose a
theme and then create a poem in your own words. Give a title and shape to your poem
related to the theme chosen by you. You can decorate or colour the base page if you want.
Even, you can submit it with a cover page mentioning your name, grade, subject and
project.

PROJECT - Hospital Waste Management


Aim : To visit a nearby hospital and collect information about how waste is managed.

Introduction : The problem of solid waste management is becoming severe day by day. In
urban areas, there is a greater proportion of generated wastes. The most hazardous among
this. is hospital waste. Since there are many potentially dangerous items in the hospital
wastes, therefore a special care has to be taken to manage such a waste. Worldwide each and
every hospital needs to follow certain set of rules before they dispose their wastes.
Objective : To understand the methods of disposal of hospital wastes.
Methodology: Survey and interviews with hospital staff and using helpful websites such as
Wikipedia and other sites.
Observations:
(1) Biomedical waste may be solid or liquid. Most of these may be infectious.
(2) Infectious wastes are handled with utmost care. Such wastes include :
(i) Discarded blood
(ii) Unwanted bacterial cultures and stocks
(ii) Identifiable body parts which have been removed during surgeries.
(iv) Other human or animal tissue
(v) Used bandages and dressings
(vi) Discarded gloves, etc.
(3) Leak-proof containers are used for storage of such matter. These containers are so tough
that they can prevent breakage during handling. Containers of International symbol of
biohazardous material.

(4) Sharps
lancets and other devices, used syringes, etc. Such sharp articles are stored in
containers till the time of their disposal. Sharps means contaminated and used or
unused needles, scalpels.

(5) At some large hospitals there are private incinerators. In the incinerator, biomedical
waste is burnt. Incineration destroys pathogens and sharps. The discarded body parts,
etc. are converted into ash and thus do not remain recognizable.
(6) Microwaves are used to carry out disinfection of the biomedical wastes to store sharps.
(7) At times the bleaching powder or bleach solution is used for disinfecting such waste.
Depending upon the type of wastes, solutions of sodium hydroxide and other chemical
disinfectants are used.
(8) Treatment of waste by heating or by using alkaline digesters is also a common practice.
(9) Segregation of waste :

Conclusion:
Steps in the management of biomedical waste are generation, accumulation, careful hand
storage, treatment. transport and disposal. In India, there is "The Biomedical Waste
(Management Handling) Rules. 1998". This rule is further amended for the regulation of
biomedical waste manager.

However, except for a few large hospitals, in most of the smaller units and clinics, the waste
disposal is a major problem. The dumping into water sources or dumping the medical waste
in landfills can cause infections among people and animals.

Your Task :
Interview with hospital staffs to understand the hospital’s waste management system and
how do they dispose off the waste. Make a power point presentation for the same. Make a
table of what objects they dispose in the different color coded bins.
