Drill Scenario observation: Maintaining the health and safety of individuals (workers) during summer is a challenge.
Dehydration and heat stroke are the main health risks in high-temperature areas. So, massive awareness campaign was
initiated through ERT drills to enhance awareness about combating heat stress. Various practical demonstration and rescue
simulations were rehearsed during TBTs to enhance field employees insights.

S.N. Drill Sequence Planning Planned time

This Heat Stress Awareness Campaign is developed, in order to educate and protect them
from heat related exposures and managing it. This drill will assist in planning, preventing and
1 Jun-22
minimizing heat related illnesses thereby protecting personnel from heat related illness and
controlling heat-related risks.

This month campaign will continuously monitor the compliance to the Heat Stress Procedure
and report violations and/or noncompliance issues. Use of thermos water bottle and ban on
plastic bags and bottles will also be closely monitored. This Heat Stress Prevention drill has
2 been executed to provide workers information with real field training and equipment Jun-22
necessary to protect them from heat related exposures and illnesses, to remediate
employees who exhibit symptoms consistent with possible heat illness, including emergency
response procedures.

ERT to perform heat stress drills using a 'live victim' along with all rescue equipment and
3 Jun-22
ambulance on site. Medical rescue shall be performed for the heat stress victims.

ERT will choose a controlled work area, secure the scene and direct the workers to gather in
4 Jun-22
a place while keeping the social distance.

ERT Lead and senior paramedic to brief the workforce about heat stress (identifying heat

stress symptoms and emergency procedure during medical evacuation)
ERT and Paramedic team to demonstrate how to deal with "IP" suffering from heat stress for
6 Jun-22
the awareness of workers.
7 Attendance of participants to be taken while Mass Tool Box Talk is on-going. Jun-22

8 Paramedic team to evacuate the IP to site clinic with the help of project ambulance. Jun-22

1 attendance. Paramedic; Mr.Ram Kumar kick started the heat stress campaign based on the
8:30 AM
severe weather condition, effects on the body and possible solutions to heat illness.

A planned Heat Stress Drill was conducted in Mass TBT area; a 'volunteer worker' showed EMH Mass TBT 07/03/2022 @

signs heat stress symptoms (severe sweating, dehydration and collapsing on site). 6:10 AM
The second Heat Stress Drill; ERT arrived the scene, cordon the area, moved the "IP" to a
IKK, LF and GPCC Mass TBT
3 shed away from the sun and began reviving IP (removing PPE, apply water compress on

The ERT and HSE elaborated on Heat Stress symptoms and controls by increasing signages
and posters on site. These signages indicates how hot or humid environment can affect both Daily Tool Box
8
mental and physical performance. Inability to get rid of body heat adequately may result in Talks/Siganges
heat illness.

Effectiveness Deficiencies

Implementation of Emergency Preparedness Protocols as per

the current Hot and Humid Weather Conditions to deal with
Heat Stress Victims if occurred and reported On-Site.

Supervisor Responsibilities : The participation and involvement

of area supervisors during the drill was satisfactory. However,
the supervisors were reminded to deliver the following
responsibilities during emergency scenarios.

1. Call for Assistance.

Emphasizing on Buddy System as it should not be preferred to

work Alone in the Area; while working in the group workers
should keep checking each other, if the physical condition of
any worker doesn't seems good immediately it should be
reported to Supervisor and call the ERT for Medical Assistance.

summer-break periods from 15th June, 2022.
2. Install sufficient water stations near workplaces with the provision of water coolers with electrolyte drink and ORS (Oral
Rehydration Solution).
3. Proper and well maintained air conditioning units should be ensured in Rest Area.
4. Compulsory use of thermos water bottle.
5. Some tips to prevent heat stress: Get Enough Sleep, Increase Fluid Intake, Avoid Sun As Much As You Can, Have A Balanced Diet,
Don’t Overeat etc.

The Drill was conducted for 4 days with most of subcontractor's workers on attendance. During the post briefing sessions, Paramedic Ram Kumar gave
information about TWL, extreme heat, symptoms of a headache, dizziness, or lack of focus, cramps in the legs or abdomen. Workers shall contact their local
supervisors or clinic for assistance and immediately move to a cool, shaded place. So, ESC advised the Subcontractors to cascade specific safety tips to
their workmen during the daily TBT sessions.
