GRADE 10-SCIENCE QUARTER 4
Week 4

Name: _________________________________ Score: ______________

Grade & Section: _________________________________ Date: ______________

I. Introductory Concept
In grade 9, you have learned that the bonding characteristics of carbon result in the
formation of larger variety of compounds. You will learn more about compounds which are essential
to life. These compounds belong to four main classes of bimolecular molecules. Proteins and
nucleic acids and some derivatives of carbohydrates and lipids which also contain nitrogen.
The activities you are about to do in this Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) will center on proteins
and nucleic acids.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

Recognize the major categories of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and
nucleic acids. (MELC-S10MTIVc-d-22)

III. Activity
Activity 1 Test for Proteins
Learning Objective:
After performing the activity, I can relate indicator reactions to the presence of organic nutrients
such as proteins.
Materials:
Paper and Pen
Procedure:
1. Study the data from the table below and answer the guide questions that follows.

Table 1 Data Result for Biuret Test

Food Samples After Biuret Test

1. Cooked potatoes Remains Blue
2. Taho Color becomes violet
3. Egg white Color becomes dark violet
4. Cooked meat Color becomes violet
5. Cooked instant noodles Remains Blue

Note: Biuret is clear or light blue in the absence of protein and pink or blue-violet in the
presence of protein.

Guide Questions: (Refer from Activity 1 Table 1)
1. Which of the following food samples contains protein?

2. Which of the following food samples does not contain protein?

3. Which of the following food samples contains much protein?

4. Base from the data result in table 1, which foods may be used for building tissues?

5. What are the building blocks of protein called?

V. Abstraction
 Proteins
Proteins are polymers of amino acids. They have many functions in the body. One of which are
found as structural materials in hair, nails and connective tissues.
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts.

 Nucleic Acids
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic acid (RNA) are nucleic acids. Both DNA and
RNA are polymers that are made up of nucleotides.
Nucleotides are molecules that are composed of three parts: a five carbon sugar, a nitrogen-
containing base, and a phosphate group. Both proteins and nucleic acids contain nitrogen in
addition to carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in their structures.

Difference Between Nucleic Acid and Amino Acid

Definition
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acid is a complex organic molecule such as DNA or RNA, made up of many
nucleotides linked in a long chain.
Amino Acid: Amino acid is a simple organic molecule, which contains both carboxyl and amino groups.

Polymer/Monomer
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acid is a polymer.
Amino Acid: Amino acid is a monomer.

Significance
Nucleic Acid: The monomer of a nucleic acid are nucleotides.
Amino Acid: The polymer of amino acids is a protein.
Atoms
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acids are made up of C, H, O, N, and P.
Amino Acid: Amino acids are made up of C, H, O, N, and S.

Functional Groups
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acids are made up of pentose sugars, nitrogenous bases and phosphate groups.
Amino Acid: Amino acids contain carboxylic groups and amino groups.

Type of Bond between Monomers

Nucleic Acid: Phosphodiester bonds occur between nucleotides.
Amino Acid: Peptide bonds occur between amino acids.

Types
Nucleic Acid: DNA and RNA are the two types of nucleic acids.
Amino Acid: Proteins are made up of twenty amino acids.

Synthesis
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acids are synthesized inside the cell by DNA replication and transcription.
Amino Acid: Amino acids are either synthesized or obtained from the diet.

Role
Nucleic Acid: Nucleic acids store genetic information of the cell and are involved in the synthesis of
functional proteins.
Amino Acid: Amino acids are used in the translation of mRNA as building blocks of proteins.

VI. Application
