Business ethics as a field of teaching and research has expanded and diversified
tremendously over the last decade. The new research spans a large diversity of fields:
corporate governance, corporate responsibility, citizenship, financial ethics, HR,
international management, leadership, virtues, religion, SMEs, values based man-
agement, and marketing, to name but a few. Business ethics has also turned into an
interdisciplinary field, without however losing its philosophical foundation. The
International Handbooks in Business Ethics series identifies crucial areas in
business ethics research and dedicates a handbook to it. It will draw upon the leading
international scholars in each field and reflect the diversity in research methods. Each
multivolume handbook contains the fundamental questions being posed, reflects the
state of the art of the research at this moment as well as the most important research
results over the past decade. In this we cover what has been learned as well as the
major challenges we face for the future. Topics in this series are identified from
discussions with leading scholars. Each handbook will be directed and compiled by a
handbook editor working in close cooperation with the series editor to ensure the
appropriateness of the contributions as well as the consistency over the series
volumes. The handbooks will be published in both print and electronic versions.

The objectives of this Handbook are threefold. Above all, it seeks to provide a
convenient reference work on the virtue ethics approach to business and manage-
ment, following both historical and systematic modes of inquiry. In order to do this,
however, it first has to identify the major authors and schools of thought as well as
their most significant contributions to virtue ethics scholarship. This constitutes the
second, subordinate goal. Thirdly, and as a consequence of the above, this work also
strives to critically examine the distinctive virtue ethics responses to the global
challenges that managers and business organizations face in the twenty-first century.
Among academic philosophers working in the mainstream of the English-
speaking world, virtue ethics had all but disappeared until the publication of
G.E.M. Anscombe’s article, “Modern Moral Philosophy” (Philosophy, 33: 1–19)
in 1958. Dominant then in the academe were deontology (Kant) and utilitarianism
(Bentham and Mill). Certainly, there was hardly a monolithic position characterizing
either one of these schools. Yet Anscombe, nonetheless, found Kant’s core idea of
“legislating for oneself” to be quite absurd, because legislation required acknowl-
edging a power superior to one, she argued, and given Kant’s agnosticism, such a
recourse to a “supreme law-giver” had become in fact impossible. At the same time,
she was equally critical of the utilitarian alternative. She held that ethics entailed that
certain actions were forbidden in themselves regardless of consequences, such as
dropping a bomb on an innocent civilian population just so that their army might
capitulate. Nevertheless, Anscombe did not directly endorse the development of
virtue ethics, due to what she perceived to be a lack of an “adequate philosophy of
psychology.”
The virtue ethics amnesia afflicting moral philosophy in general affected business
and management ethics as well. Deontology, which evaluates behavior exclusively
in its conformity with universal rules of justice and rights, without reference to
context or outcomes may have prevailed in theory, but utilitarianism, which judges
action through a cost-benefit analysis, without regard for norms or values has
dominated in practice. Anscombe herself had identified many of the difficulties
that beset virtue ethics. Firstly, the meaning of virtue in contemporary society was
no longer clear. Neither were there satisfactory accounts of basic concepts of moral
psychology such as “intention,” “desire,” “motive,” or “action.” Instead, there was

In this way, we hope to offer a comprehensive view of the state of virtue ethics
scholarship in business and management without untowardly sacrificing depth,
pluralism, and nuance.

Christoph Luetge holds the Peter Löscher Chair of Business Ethics at Technische
Universität München. He has written and edited a number of books including Order
Ethics or Moral Surplus: What Holds a Society Together? (Lexington, 2015),
Experimental Ethics (co-editor, Palgrave, 2014), and Handbook of the Philosophical
Foundations of Business Ethics (editor, Springer, 2013). He has published numerous
articles on various aspects of business ethics, general ethics, political philosophy,
and philosophy of economics. He has a particular interest both in experimental
studies as well as in the role of competition for ethics. He founded the Munich
Lecture in Business Ethics series and serves as a member of the Ethics Advisory
Board of the European Medical Information Framework and of the Advisory
Council of the Bavarian School of Public Policy.

Harvard University. Since then, he has received fellowships from the 21st Century
Trust Foundation (London); the Academic Council on the United Nations System
(Yale University); the American Society of International Law (Washington, DC); the
Salzburg Seminar, Bentley University (Waltham, MA); the Policy and Leadership
Studies Department of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological
University (Singapore); and the Institute of Education of the University of London.
He became editor of the Philosophical Foundations section of the Journal of
Business Ethics in 2009 and joined the editorial board of Business Ethics Quarterly
in 2011.
His research deals with the issues at the juncture of ethics with economics and
politics, such as the virtues and the common good. His book, The Moral Capital of
Leaders. Why Virtue Matters (Edward Elgar, 2003), has been translated into Spanish
and Chinese. In 2008 he published Corporate Governance and Ethics: An Aristote-
lian Perspective (Edward Elgar) with a foreword by Prof. Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford
University). His latest book Happiness and Virtue Ethics in Business. The Ultimate
Value Proposition (Cambridge University Press, 2015) defends the critical role of the
virtues in modern happiness studies.

Ignacio Ferrero is Professor of Business Ethics and the Dean of the School of
Economics and Business Administration at the University of Navarra. He has been
Visiting Scholar at Bentley University, Harvard University (Real Colegio
Complutense) and Notre Dame University (Mendoza College of Business). He has
published several books on the History of Economic Thought and articles in such
academic journals as Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, Busi-
ness Ethics: A European Review, and Business and Society Review. He is currently
working on virtue ethics and the common good in finance, and he is cofounder of the
research group on virtue ethics in business and management, with a worldwide
network of collaborators. He holds a B.S. in Philosophy and in Business Adminis-
tration (University of Navarra) and a Ph.D. in Economics (University of Navarra).

Suivant Scarron, dans la Requête de Fainmort (comme il le
nommait), le malheureux n’était pas même épargné par la
hallebarde des suisses préposés à la garde des hôtels dont il
assiégeait la porte aux heures des repas, et, s’il ne faut pas
admettre littéralement tout ce que la verve burlesque du cul-de-jatte
amène sous sa plume, le fond de son récit, confirmé par des
centaines d’autres témoignages analogues, n’en reste pas moins
d’une indiscutable vérité. C’est Fainmort qui parle, dans les vers
