The British Board of Film Classification are a non
governmental body and they classify/categorize films depending on the target audience a film is aimed at e.g. an animation film will be classed U. They was set up in 1912 and have been classifying films for cinemas etc. every since.
What does U stand for?
The u stands for universal. It should be suitable for children 4 years +. This category, however can be difficult as you cannot tell what upsets a particular child.
What does PG stand
for? PG stands for parental guidance. This means that the film is generally suitable for viewing, but it also means that children should have a parent watching with them. To watch a PG children should be around 8 years+. Parents should consider what may upset their child as there may be some sensitive scenes.
What is 12 and 12A?
Films classified 12A are generally not suitable for children under the age of 12. Parents must accompany children who are 12 and want to watch a 12A film. The 12 rating is used as it is easier for retailers to sell blue rays and dvds.
What does the 15
symbol mean? The classification of 15 means that viewers must be at least 15 to watch the film. This is because these films are not suitable for children under this age group as they can contain things such as; strong language, sexual preferences, nudity etc.
What does 18 stand
for? The classification 18 means that the film is for adults to watch only. 18 films contain things such as; strong violence and language, some offensive terms, sexual references and sometimes real sex scenes, drug abuse etc.
What rating would I
chose for my opening sequence? I would classify my film opening sequence as a 15, as its genre is not suitable for younger children, and there are inferences of violent culture. I feel that this is appropriate for 15 year olds as the although it is a thriller and there are elements of violence, there is no strong language or sexual preferences and so it seems suitable.
