Universal Call to Holiness
Text: Luke 5: 1-11 (A call to discipleship)
( Gitawag sa pagkatinun-an)

• Reading of the Text : Luke 5:1-11

A. Knowing your hunger (vv.1-2)
1. Two contrasting sight: Peter and his friends appeared
somewhat indifferent to Jesus. They went on washing their nets.
The crowd, on the other hand, pushed their way up to Jesus to
listen to what he had to say.

2. There is hunger for the Word of God in everyone. The need to

understand one’s existence is a basic reality. The need for
direction is felt so that one will find fulfillment in life. And the
Word of God is such that it will really confront individuals,
transform them and guide then to a life of grace.
• 3. Man seeks for the truth. Jesus is the truth. So
everyone is drawn to experience the person of Jesus
for them to be liberated and experienced the
fullness of life – to live for what is true.

• APPLICATION:
• a.) Whose words are we listening now? Can it give us
answers to our questions about our life? Can it give
us direction to experiencing more meaning of our
life?
• b) What are we seeking for now? Practicality?
Convenience and comfort? Where is truth? Who is
telling the truth?
• c) What is your attitude to God and his Teachings?
B. ENCOUNTERING JESUS ( vv.2 -3)

• 1. Jesus saw two boats pulled up on the beach. He got

into one of it sat on it and taught the crowd.

• 2. Out of many boats, Jesus chose Peter’s boat to

teach from. What does it mean?
• a) the image of the boat reflects the image of the
Church. How is our church now?

• Still most of the Catholics are still indifferent to

the church: beyond these factors, we see failures in
renewal have come from a deeper source: our
hardness of heart and resistance to conversion
b) The Person of Peter
• Peter , the fisherman, was told by Jesus, a carpenter, to
fish. Should an engineer listen to a vendor how to build a
bridge?
• In a worldly standard, no, he won’t. But Peter obeyed.
Obedience is the key for Peter to know Jesus more deeply
and at the same time himself, a sinner not worthy of the
master’s love. The encounter with Jesus allowed Peter to
have a better glimpse of God loving and affirming being.

• The moment we see God, we couldn’t help but see

our failures. We come to acknowledge our own
sinfulness. But as to how we respond to this
largely depends to us. Either we ran away from his
love or we listen more closely to God and accept
his command.
APPLICATION:
• a) When was the last time we felt the presence of God in our
life? Kanus-a man ang katapusan nga imong nasinati ang
presensya sa Dios?

• B. How did we respond to his presence? Have we come to

acknowledge our sinfulness? Have we listened to him in humility
and accept his command?
• Giunsa man nimo pagtubag ang iyang presensya? Ato bang
giangkon ang atong pagkamakasasala? Namati ba kita kaniya
diha sa pagpaubos ug pagdawat sa iyang sugo?

• c) As believers, we are the Church. Have we involved ourselves

towards the renewal of the Church as community of disciples
and as a church of the poor. Isip magtotoo sa Dios,
nagapakabana ba ikaw alang sa kabag-ohan sa Simbahan isip
katilingban sa mga tinun-an ug simbahan sa mga kabos?
C. BECOMING FISHERS OF MEN

• 1. Do not be afraid: from now on you will become fishers

of men.”
• 2. What does it take to become fishers of men?
• a) Conversion, a change of heart, is what is needed. But
this is incomplete if we don’t recognize that conversion is,
first and foremost a response to God’s action in us,
namely his affirming love.
• b) it must be also that before Peter came to that point
of conversion, Jesus made two requests to him. What are
these requests? Which one seemed easier? Which one
had a greater effect on Peter? Could he obey the second
without the first? Is it fair to day that conversion comes
only when we are able to say yes to God in small or big
ways? Is it fair to say that saying yes to God is a matter
of risk taking that calls for faith in us?
IV. PROCESS

A. INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION/WORK

1. Do you have any “hunger” right now? In your heart? In your

community? In your place of work? What causes these
“hungers” in you?

Aduna bay kagutom karon sa imong kinabuhi?

sa imong kasingkasing? Sa imong katilingban? Sa imong
trabahoan? Unsay may tinubdan sa maong kagutom?

2. Do you feel any hunger for God? What did you do about it?
Adunay kaba’y kagutom sa Dios? Unsay imo gibuhat niana nga
kagutom?
3. what have you done in order to fill your self from the
hunger that disturbs you?
Unsay imo gibuhat aron imong mahulipan ang imo
kaugalingon nga kagutom nga nagtandog kanimo?

4. Jesus calls you to take small and big steps in order to

cast your nets into the deep. Are you ready to say
yes? Are you ready to take the risk? What do you
think Jesus is asking you right now?
karon?

Sesyon 2: Repentance (Pagbasol)
• Repentance is a very important part of our life, Christian
life. Not only do we have to repent when we forsake our

noblest things

the father had were graciously bestwoed upon Him

those who have done two things.
• - gotten right with God
• - found the place and service he made for us.
