The Criteria of Word Classes
Syntactic Criteria

The syntactic criteria for word classes are based on what


words a given word occurs with and the types of phrase in
which a given word occurs.

Now look at these examples:

a. a tall building
b. This building is tall.
c. a very tall building
d1. a taller building
d2. a more beautiful building
Morphology Criterion

Criterion here is used at stake is simply whether a given word allows


grammatical suffixes or not.

Look at these examples:


1. Jump – ed
2. Collect – collection

1. The jumped boy is yelling at me. | I jumped to the river.


2. I collect some books from US. | I have some book’s collection.
Morpho-syntactic Criteria

These criteria have to do with inflectional suffixes.

Look at these examples:

I sleep in the classroom


I am sleeping in the classroom
I slept in the classroom
Semantic Criteria

Semantic is relating to meaning in language or logic.

There are two types of semantic criteria:


1. what words mean
2. what speakers do with words

Look at these example:


1. They transmitted the concert live
2. They live transmission of the concert
