Part 3 - Evaluation

How effective is the

combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
House style  The use of black and white on all of the
ancillary products shows that there is a
relationship with the products which is effective
as the audience can recognize the products as
they compliment each other with this ‘house
style’. The products work well together due

 Also the font is the same on all the products.

The name of the artist ‘Chris Issac’ stands out
as it is in white against the black background.
This is effective as the audience can
immediately identify who the artist is.

 The magazine advert and DVD digi-pack is

promoting the artist and the song ‘For You’.
Similar to the artists name, ‘For you’ is white
against the black to stand out yet still keep
with in the colour scheme. ‘For You’ is written
in italics which grabs the audiences attention as
it is different to all the other bold fonts on the
products.
All the font for the in-depth
information is consistent as it is the
same throughout the ancillary
products. This is effective as you
can clearly see that they are
promoting the same artist through
the products.

The background image is a narrow path and

empty. The only person on the main cover
we see is the main artist. The idea of the
path being empty conveys to the audience
that the song has elements of loneliness.
This refers back to the title “For You”, the
sense that the artist is looking for this
person’s ‘love’ in order for him to not be
lonely.
The path at the end looks like it is going to
meet, foreshadowing events of the video
that the artist in the end will not be alone.
It is clear to identify who is the artist as
we can see the same performer in each of
the products. There is also link between
the main product and the ancillary
products here which is easily
recognizable. The artist is wearing the
same outfits in this scene on the video,
the DVD digi-pack and magazine advert.

The background here is similar,

with the city imagery, which links
well with the products as the
Magazine advert and video both
consist of having buildings and
streets.
Branding
The ancillary products portray an urban feel,
which is seen through mise-en-scene. The
background on the magazine advert is the inner-
city which informs the audience the type of
environment the artist is surrounded by.
Also, the outfit the artist is wearing is urbanised
yet sophisticated.

A typical RnB music video will have scenes

with a ‘black drop’. RnB videos are
typically more urban and having this
scene is conventional to this genre which
the audience may identify with.

The location of the artist which is in the

inner-city, again brands the products and
artist to be urbanised.
Mode of address
The Language used here
illustrates that it is informal.
The use of the word “plus”
is an example of informal
speech. This is effective as
our audience are
working/middle class which
they will use informal
speech.

The venue ‘Koko’ is located in ‘Camden’

which is in North-West London. Camden is
in an urban environment which would have
attracted the target audience.
Mode of address/Representation
The style of the artist conveys to a viewer that
he is an urban, RnB artist. The majority, if not
all RnB artist are informal. The clothes the artist
is wearing here represents him to be informal
and relaxed.
In all three products the artist is dressed
casually, which is effective as our target
audience are able to identify with this style and
can relate to it.
