BASIC CIRCUIT FOR ELECTRIC
ARC FURNACE
• This furnace has three Electrodes connected to the
secondary side of 3Φ transformer.
• T/F secondary side winding is connected in “Star”
• The furnace transformer will have high reactance of
the order of 30 to 35%
• The transformer secondary side has provision for
no. of tapings.
• The electrodes have to be short circuited momentarily
and then separated from the charge to establish the Arc.

BASIC CIRCUIT FOR ELECTRIC
ARC FURNACE

• Arcs drawn between the tip of each electrode and the metal

charge causes eventual melting.

• So the solid melts to form a liquid pool.

• The arcs make contact between the surface of metal pool

and electrode tip, with additional Arcs between tip and
neighbour electrode or wall.

BASIC CIRCUIT FOR ELECTRIC
ARC FURNACE

• Reduce the secondary voltage to reduce the length of the

arcs and thus avoid burning side of wall and roof refractories.

For high power rating arc furnaces up to 10 – 12 MVA.

• Extra reactance is added to the furnace due to Delta

connection in secondary.
