INLINE INSPECTION OF

PIPELINE:
INTELLIGENT PIGGING
INTRODUCTION TO INTELLIGENT PIGGING:
NEEDS OF ILI IN PIPELINES
 Record information about the internal conditions of a pipeline.
 Direct assessment of physical condition of pipeline.
 Collect internal & external data of pipe without interruption of pipeline operation.
 Removal of any foreign material entity trapped inside

Pull Through Test
 Pull through Test is carried out by pulling the inspection tool through the test pipe by means of hydraulic or
manual winch.
 The tool is moved at constant velocity of 0.3-2 m/sec.
 On the test pipe, artificial models of defect types of different sizes are applied. Dimensions of the defects are
accurately measured.
 Tool is switched to operating mode during the test and after the test, the received data is analyzed and hence
calibration achieved.
Magnetic Marker Placement

 Pipeline marker magnets are used by pipeline inspection pigging operators to provide absolute
position, or waypoints, along the pipeline that can be coordinated with the inspection log
generated by an intelligent pipeline pig.
 For route marking and detection by ILI tool and hence can be used for calibration.

Pipeline Magnetic Marker Installation process involves

1. Pipeline exposure
2. Magnetic Marker Placement at 12o’clock and 3o’clock facing the direction of flow.
3. Capturing DGPS coordinates
Caliper Gauge Pigging ( Electronic Gauge Pig)

 EGP continuously measures the inside diameter of the pipeline through an array of sensing fingers
that are spring loaded to hold them in contact with the pipe wall.
 As the EGP tool moves through a pipeline all radial sensor movements are detected and recorded.
Any variation to the internal surface of the pipe is registered in a user friendly format that serves to
independently verify any ID features.
 Odometer wheels generate distance data which is continuously collected and stored with the
measuring data from the radial sensing fingers

Magnetic flux Leakage

Magnetic flux leakage (TFI or Transverse Field Inspection technology) is a magnetic method of nondestructive
testing that is used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly pipelines and storage tanks.
The basic principle is that a powerful magnet is used to magnetize the steel.
