INTRODUCTION

22/11/2019
Historical Background

 Developing a 3-Dimensional object from CAD.

 It is known as additive manufacturing.

 Resin, Nylon and plastic are the materials

used for 3-D printing.

22/11/2019
Historical Background

 There are different 3-D printing methods.

 FDM is the widely used manufacturing process.

22/11/2019
Objectives

 To review the impact of 3-D printing.

 To find the preferred 3-D printing method.

22/11/2019
Scope

 Two major cities:

I. Washington D.C.
II. San Francisco

22/11/2019
Scope

 Four 3-D printing methods:

1. FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling)
2. SLS (Stereolithography)
3. SLA (Selective Laser Sintering)
4. Binder Jetting

22/11/2019
Limitations

 Lack of resources, Time constraints

 High population in the neighbouring cities

 Lack of Information

22/11/2019
Methodology

 Data collected by survey through questionnaire.

 Questionnaire included fifteen questions.
 Distributed through mail to 180 companies of
both the cities,
I. Randomly selected companies.

22/11/2019
Methodology

 Out of 180 companies,

1. Only 120 companies from both the cities
returned with a filled questionnaire.
2. 80 out of 120 companies were interviewed.
3. 40 from each city.

CONCLUSIONS

22/11/2019
A pattern was observed in the preferences for
each of 3-D printing technique in both the
cities.

22/11/2019
Conclusion

 3-D printing methods are less time consuming and

are cheaper techniques.
 These methods are user friendly.
 Can manufacture different shapes of any size.
 3-D printing technology is expensive.
 Limited materials.

22/11/2019
FDM

 Preferred method from both the cities.

 Reliable as it is less time consuming and
cheaper technique.
 User-friendly method

22/11/2019
FDM

 High resistance towards heat.

 Needs a finishing touch

22/11/2019
SLA

 One of the good techniques.

 High precision finish
 Reasonable cost.

22/11/2019
SLA

 Can 3-D print small to big parts with high

precision.
 Fragile objects or parts.
 Expensive machines.

22/11/2019
SLS

 Reasonable technique.
 Has good durability and strength.
 Ideal for dyeing.
 Porous and brittle
 Expensive

22/11/2019
Binder Jetting

 Least preferred technique from both the

cities.

 Can create objects with variety of colours.

 Reusable method

22/11/2019
Binder Jetting

 Not many materials for printing.

 The objects are fragile

 The final method does not give any

guarantee that the object is strong.

22/11/2019
RECOMMENDATIONS

22/11/2019
Recommendations

 High precision finish required objects can be printed

using the SLA method.

 Alternative material used for printing in SLA

technique is the “Durable resin”.

 HIP process reduces the porosity character of SLS.
