What is Pure Substance?

Pure Substance
- a defined substance that are
made of only one type of atom or
only one type of molecule ( a
group of atoms bonded together ).
Purity – a measure whether a substance is
pure.
Examples of Pure Substances
• Tin
• Sulfur
• Water
• Table salt
• Baking Soda
• Gold
• Diamonds
• Sugar cube
• Etc.
* All chemical elements and compounds are pure substance.

• Tin, Sulfur & Diamonds are chemical

elements, then, they are pure substances.

• Water Sugar & Baking Soda are

chemical compounds therefore, these are
pure substances.
Sugar cube - a pure sugar would only
contain molecules of the substance called
sucrose.

Table Salt - contains 97% to 99% sodium

chloride.
- pure sodium chloride is an
ionic crystal solid.
Gold - made up of gold atoms.
- no other elements or
compound added to gold.

Diamonds – all the particles of it are the

same.
Note:
The material is NO longer a pure
substance if it has been mixed with
another pure substance.
