CLASSIFICATIONS OF MATTER
Classification of Matter
• A pure substance is matter that has
a definite or constant composition
and distinct properties.
Ex. water, silver, ethanol, table salt
(sodium chloride), and carbon
dioxide.
Pure Substances
Pure substances are either compounds (combinations of
elements) or elements.

Compound is a substance with constant composition

that can be broken down into elements by chemical
processes.
An example of a chemical process is the electrolysis of
water
Pure Substances
Elements are substances that cannot be
decomposed into simpler substances by
chemical or physical means.
The first letter of the symbol for an element is
always capitalized, but the second letter is
NEVER capitalized.
Classification of Matter
• A mixture is a combination of two or
more substances in which the
substances retain their distinct
identities.
•Some examples are air, soft drinks,
milk, and cement
Mixtures

Mixtures are
either

homogeneous or
heterogeneous
Mixtures
Homogeneous mixture – the composition
is uniform. Solutions are homogeneous
mixture.
Ex. a spoonful of sugar dissolves in water
Alloy – is the homogeneous mixture of
metals or a mixture of metal and non
metal.
Mixtures

Heterogeneous mixture - the

composition is not uniform.
Ex. sand is mixed with iron filings
