MENTAL HEALTH

IN BRITISH
YOUTHS
MENTAL HEALTH

• I chose mental health as my subject for these films because mental health and faking it needs
more awareness. Faking mental health I believe it is a common occurrence within the British
youths of today, with the help of awareness being spread this problem within British youths can
be sorted.
• Mental health is very common in modern day society and is common within youths, which is
why I chose to use mental health for my project.
RESEARCH

• I conducted a lot of research before I started to work on my films. I watched previous films and stop
motion projects on a similar topic to help conduct my research in a more effective way. Watching
these films helped me gather a good amount of research. From this research, I gathered new types
of camera shots and different ways of story telling.
• For stop motion, I researched frame rate and what type of frame rate to shoot in, I also researched
how stop motion works.
• For my short film, I researched the different types of camera shots, I also watched other short films
based on my topic for my films.
• Finally, I researched how mental health ties to the topic of British youths and I researched factual
events which have happened to youths who suffer with mental health
MY IDEAS

• To meet the 14-24 target audience, I produced an idea to tell a story about having a mental
illness and faking it, I also made it so the audience can relate to a story like this. This story
would be for my 3 minute film.
• For my stop motion, I produced the idea of using two people made up of plasticine to portray
the emotions of mental health and faking it using shapeshifting. This was done by taking
multiple shots of the models. The stop motion film had many different ideas generated due to
how creative stop motion can be.
EXAMPLES
HOW DID I PRODUCE THESE?

Stop motion:
To produce the stop motion I used my own materials to create the characters. I also shot in a
specific frame rate to make the stop motion production flow as best as it can. I had to create the
background for my piece and I also set up the position of the camera myself as well. The hardest
part of this production was making the continuity a success for this production.
Short film:
I believe the hardest part of producing the short film was to find the right location to film. This is
because I wanted the location to fit the morale and mood of the story. The editing was a key
factor for this production as a whole day was used to edit my footage.
FEEDBACK

Stop motion:
One of the main sources of improvement was for the narrative to make more sense. I believe this
feedback is good to hear because I can improve on what needs to be improve for future projects.
A positive for my feedback was the flow of the animation was smooth.
Short film:
A room for improvement is to use more graphic match cuts to make the edit seamless. I agree
with this feedback and will look to improve this on future projects. A positive of the feedback for
my short film was I made the story link to the thought of loneliness well.
MOVING FORWARD

• What I have learnt from these productions and the brief is I can now edit to a higher quality than
before which I see as a good improvement. I also believe that I have learnt new types of camera
shots to help me in future.
• To improve, I need to be ablest to produce ideas for my project in a quicker succession. This
would help me save time and focus on the actual production more. Also, I believe that I need to
improve on using different types of white balance when shooting my shots.
• I believe I am good at using different types of camera shots as it helps improve the quality of my
work by a higher margin. I also believe that I am good at conducting research before my
productions which I believe is a good skill to poses because it helps make the final production be
a higher quality and give more ideas.
