01 Direct Speech
A direct speech gives the exact words of the speaker. Quotation
marks (“…”)are used to set off a speaker’s exact words.

02 Reported Speech
An indirect speech also called reported speech is a report of a
speaker’s words or messages. No quotation marks are used.

Phrases
The term phrase refers to a group of words
that doesn’t include a subject and a verb.
It acts as a part of a speech within in
sentence.

Noun Phrase
Noun phrase is a phrase that has a noun as its
head or performs the same function as a noun.

A noun phrase consists of a noun (person,


place, things) and other related words (usually
modifiers and determiners) which modify the
noun.

Form: modifier + noun
Examples:
Noun Phrase
Amelia had a weak heart.
Weak (modifier) + heart (noun)

The young man threw the old dog a bone.

B. Verb Phrase

A verb phrase is a combination of main verb


and its auxiliary (helping verb) in a sentence.

Verb phrase is a part of a sentence containing


the verb and any direct or indirect object, but
not the subject.

verb in a sentence

C. Prepositional Phrase

Prepositional phrase contains a preposition (the first


word) + a noun or pronoun.

Prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends


with a noun or a pronoun called the object of the
preposition.

(Remember that a preposition is a word placed before a


noun or pronoun to show its relation to some other words.)

Form: preposition + noun/pronoun
Examples:

Ella is in the park.
in (preposition) + park (noun)

The food is for her.


For (preposition) + her (pronoun)
