TAVOI WARREN
IMAGE MANIPULATION: PAST

• photo manipulation started as earlier as the 19th century which was captured on glass and tin plates. These
practices started not to long after the first photograph which was in 1825 by joseph Nicephorus niece. The first
photographic print was on a photogene graved. They used to retouch with ink, paint and airbrush. Negative can
be manipulated while still in the camera using double-exposure techniques or using a red room which involved
bleaching to artfully lighten. In the late 20th century that digital photography was consider to be a radical new
approach and was rejected by photographers because of it substandard quality. In the 21st century as a result of
innovation that has greatly improved digital image quality while reducing the bulk and weight of camera and
equipmemt
EXAMPLE OF IMAGE MANIPULATION

In the Victorian times they started doing photo which

looks like one of them are beheaded. Trick
photography was around for ages but in the Victorian
time weren’t nearly concerned with artificially
slimming down. They used to have fun there and then
with the photos. These photo was created by
combining image from multiple negative. Some other
novelty photography offered at the time included
dwarf giant and spirit photo.
PRE-DIGITAL COMMERCIAL IMAGE
MANIPULATION TECHNIQUES
• Before there was any digital way of changing images there was an era called pre-digital which was
used for retouching images such as:
• An airbrush: is a small, air-operated tool that sprays various media, most often paint but also ink and
dye, and foundation by a process of nebulization.
• Charcoal sticks: is used in art for drawing, making rough sketches in painting
• Kneaded eraser: is function by absorbing and picking up graphite and charcoal particles, in addition to
carbon and pastel marks
• Gouache paint: is similar to watercolour however modified to make it opaque (the quality of lacking
transparency or translucence)
DIGITAL BLEMISH REMOVAL TECHNIQUES

• an digital blemish removal is any type of mark, spot, flaw or discoloration that appears
on the skin. In Photoshop there are a couple tools that could be used but there are mainly
only three. The main three are dodge, burn and spot healing tool. The first two tools are
used to lighten or darken areas that are used in the image. These tool are based on the
darkroom technique that was used to exposed specific areas of a print so on the digital
photo it has the same effect that can be done on the application. Dodging is when you
lighten an area and burning is making an area darker. The spot healing tool is as tool that
is used to removed spots and remove blemish on the face.
DIGITAL BLEMISH REMOVAL

This is an example of where we can see a

digital blemish removal in used on
Photoshop. We can see where her spot
around her face and with the spot healing
tool buy getting her spot removable and the
dodge tool to lighten her face.
DIGITAL COLOUR CORRECTION TECHNIQUES

• Colour correction is simply to balance out the colour in the image. This mean removing a
colour cast from the image or bringing out colours to have more definition and vibrancy.
This technique is easy and very fast. For example in the fil Marianne the night scenes
was filmed in the day light because it was cheaper however with the colour correction
techniques it made it easier to make it look like a night sky. This is so they could create
the mood and style for the film
DIGITAL COLOUR CORRECTION

• The example I have on the side is of a

before and after effect of colour correction.
In this image we can see that the colour in
the before photo is more blue which gives
of the cold atmosphere and that there was a
lot of blue lights around him. In the after
photo we can see that he made the photo
warmer which made the blue go away and
brings out what he is wearing and what his
face look like more. This is effect when you
take pictures and the colour light takes over.
DIGITAL COLOUR CORRECTION

• This advert is for a perfume called Morden Muse. This is another

example of colour correction can be used to make the audience
more applied and interested. In this photo we can see that she is
wearing a red suit and the plant and background are red. This is
effected as the colour red draws the human eye and make them
want to look more at it. The colour red has been turn up that why
the colour red pops more than any other colour. The person that
in this photo there skin has been airbrushed to make it look more
smother and remove any blemishes.
PRE-DIGITAL USE OF MANUAL PHOTOMONTAGE AND
PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLAGE IN ART AND ADVERTISING

• In photography the main important aspects is

the physical image. A photomontage is when
there a combination of several shot joined
together for artistic effect or to show more of
the subject than can be shown in a single
artwork. These photo can be overlapping,
cutting, gluing and some times combined
with non photograph material such as text or
other abstract shape.
DIGITAL PHOTO COMPOSITING

• Digital photo compositing is when

a combination of two or more
image to make on single picture.
in Photoshop this would be done
through cutting bits and pieces of
a photo and using different tools
to move them about and drop
them in different position and
putting them on a page whiles
merging the layers together in a
way that look nature.
DIGITAL VISUAL EFFECTS AND FILTERS

• Visual effects and filter are regularly used in manipulation of

an image as they enhance an image or adding stuff and
things onto the image that wasn’t there in the first place. For
example in these picture is that there a guy that standing in
front of a white background and no effects but when the
effects was added the background changed to green with
colours and air bushed was used on his skin to make it look
more shiny and make the fire effect look good. The fire is
added to his weapon and shield where the flames are going
upwards.. The colour correction of this image has increased
the warming filter which make his skin look more yellow as
well.
DIGITAL VISUAL EFFECTS AND
FILTERS
• In this poster we can see the used of digital visual effect
and filter but this time the example is for a film poster. In
the back ground we can see how there is a cloudy and
dull in the background. We can see all the different main
characters that are shown in the film in the poster
looking in all different way. The person that standing on
the road has a big explode behind him which mean that
the layer of the explosion is underneath him. This give a
vibes of a lot of action which is good for a action film
and make it more Appling.
LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES

• The legal and ethical issues that

come with touch up and
manipulation of a image is that it
give of false advertising issues and
create and unrealistic expectations
when it comes to certain products
and beauty.
LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES

• This is an example where OJ Simpson is in

two magazine. in the first he has a mugshot of
him and in the other one they made him look
darker by darkinghis skin with a filter. This is
was to make him look more sinister and less
human like. They make him look guilty when
he is only on trail which is wrong as people
that are reading are going to make it look like
he already guilty.
