Engineering Utilities II

Introduction

 The course focuses on the subsystems of a building. Engineers must understand

the interrelationship between a building and its subsystem and need sufficient
knowledge of building systems and design alternatives to recommend appropriate
solutions that suit the site, climate, building type and occupants.
Building subsystem
 An assembly of components that performs a specific function in a building usually referred to as
utilities.

Types of Building sub-system:

- Electrical System
- Network System
- Gas System
- Plumbing System
- Fire Protection System
- Conveying System
- Acoustic System
Plumbing System

 Plumbing System is any system that conveys fluids for a wide range of
applications. Plumbing uses pipes, valves , plumbing fixtures, tanks, and other
apparatuses to convey fluids.
Types of Plumbing System

 Cold Water Lines

 Sanitary Drainage Lines
 Storm Drainage Lines
Cold Waterline System

 A system of pipes that brings water from the main supply into a building.
Sanitary Line

 A system of piping that conveys sewage or other liquid waste to an approve point
of disposal.
Storm Drainage Line

 Is a network of pipes that channels storm water (rainwater) to disposal points.

Fire Protection System

 Fire protection systems are building features that either actively or passively

help to control the amount of damage that can occur to a building and protect its
occupants in the event of a fire.
 Fire suppression systems, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems are all types of
fire protection systems that help with fire detection and protecting building
occupants and equipment.
 Systems work in different ways, but all have a common goal to detect a fire and
protect the building, its occupants, and valuables.
Mechanical System

 A conveyor system is a common piece of mechanical handling equipment that

moves materials from one location to another.
 Conveyor system in buildings provides vertical and horizontal transportation
within the building.
 Conveyor system gives easier and faster access from point to point and provides
convenient transportation of large and heavy cargos within the building.
Acoustic System

 Building acoustics is the science of controlling noise in buildings. This includes

the minimization of noise transmission from one space to another and the control
of the characteristics of sound within spaces themselves.
