P- 1
1-1 Principle of Hydraulic Pressure Push a piston of 1cm2 cross section with 1kgf.
1) Property of Stationary Fluid
Hydraulic pressure is applied for various industries and has
become widespread significantly these days. One of the
reason is that hydraulic pressure could bring large power
with a little power. This can be possible to use property thatt 1kgf per 1cm2 is applied on
he liquid has. When liquid is put in airtight container and it any surface.
is applied load from the top, the volume is not decreased and pr 1kgf/cm2
essure is created because liquid is incompressible. Statio
nary liquid has following property according to Pasca
l’s Law.
Power applied to liquid in an airtight container.
① Pressure that put on surface touching with stationary liquid is ap
plied vertically to the surface.
When Fkgf is applied to piston A, power of P1=F/A(kgf/cm 2)
② The size of pressure at a point of stationary liquid is equal to
every direction. is generated in cylinder A.
This pressure of P1(kgf/cm2) transmit to piston B with cross
③ Pressure applying to bottom of container that by the weigh of sta
tionary liquid is decided by the height of liquid surface, and not rel section Bcm2 according to Pascal’s Law.

ated to the shape of container. If it counterbalance when Wkgf is applied to piston B,

P2=W/B(kgf/cm2 ) .
④ Pressure applied to certain area of stationary liquid in airtight
container transmit equally to entire container. If A=1cm2, B=50cm2, F2kgf, and W=100kgf,
P1=2kgf/1cm2=2kgf/cm2
P2=100kgf/50cm2=2kgf/cm2
P1=P2.
It is clear to mach with Pascal’s Law.

P- 2
2) Use of Pressure
When 2kaf of power is applied to small piston based on both gate cross-section of communicating tu
be ratio is 1:50, it counterbalances with putting 100kgf of weight on large piston.
It shows that the power can be increased by liquid also as same as the principle of leverage.

1-2 Property and Principle of Fluid
It needs to understand hydraulic devices correctly and mechanical property of fluid that transmit conversion
of energy, for understanding hydraulic unit and circuit.
1) Unit
Units that applied in this text are all Sl and other units that can be combined with Sl (refer to JIS Z8202).
(Refer to attached technical document for unit conversion.)
2) Density and Weigh Volume Ratio
γ=ρ g based on density is ρ, weigh volume ratio is γ, and acceleration of gravity is g . V2
3) Continuous Formula
A2
Fluid has steady flow and unsteady flow. Steady flow does not changed the condition
(flow speed, pressure, density, and temperature) by time, and unsteady flow changed.
In the mid-flow (refer to right figure), it is often unsteady flow when more appropriate.
However, it shall be handled as steady flow under certain condition.
In case of steady flow, the passing flow volume Q is constant at any cross section.
Q = v1A1=v2A2
A1: Cross Section (cm2) V1
A2: Cross Section (cm )2

v1: Flow Speed at Cross Section A1 (cm/s)

v2: Flow Speed at Cross Section A2 (cm/s)
Above is a continuous formula. A1

P- 4
4) Bernoulli’s Principle
It has three kinds of energy; kinetic energy of liquid, energy of pressure, and energy of position. Energy cons
ervation law work out in case of no energy change in mid-flow of steady. Even fluid changes
the condition while flowing, summation of kinetic energy of liquid, energy of pressure, and energy of position is
not changed according to energy conservation law. Below figure shows summation of kin
etic energy and pressure energy is constant when flow pass is horizontal and flow volume is constant.

B
Summation of kinetic energy and pressure
A C energy is constant when flow pass is
horizontal and flow volume is constant.
Figure shows how pressure changes by
flow speed.
Bernoulli’s principle is expressed as
following formula.

2 2
● v 1 p1 v 2 p2
+ + h1 = + + h 2 = Constant
● ●
2g r 2g r
h : Position Head
v1, v2 : Flow Speed (m/s)
Flow speed is high and
pressure is weak at small If ignore friction in pipe, the p1, p2 : Pressure (kgf/m2)

same as A again. g : Acceleration of weight (m/s)

Pressure is increased by larger cross-section

and slower flow speed. P- 5
