MATH 3

DIVIDING BY ONE-DIGIT DIVISORS

WITHOUT REMAINDER
LET'S LEARN!
Example 1:
A school had a fund raising activity to build a stage. The students collected
recyclable materials like soda cans, old newspaper, white paper, and plastic and
glass bottles. They were able to collect a total of 96 kg of sda cans, which they
palce in sacks. If 8 kg soda cans were placed in each sak, jow many sacks did
they used?
96 ÷ 8 = N
To solve for N, we need to perform division

STEP 1 Divide the first digit of the dividend by the divisor.

1
8 96
9 ÷8=1
LET'S LEARN!
Example 1:
1
1x8=8
STEP 2

Multiply the
8 96
quotient in step 1 -8
by the divisor.
Subtract this 9-8=1 1
product from the
first digit of the
dividend.
LET'S LEARN!
Example 1:
STEP 3 12
Bring down the next
8 96
digit of the dividend.
The difference in step
-8
2, together with the
digit that you bought
16 ÷ 8 = 2
16
down, will be the new
dividend. Divide this
dividend by the
divisor.
LET'S LEARN!
Example 1: 2 x 8 = 16

STEP 4 12
Multiply the quotient
8 96
in step 3 by the
divisor. The subtract
-8
this product from the
dividend that you 16
16 - 16 = 0
- 16
used in step 3.

0
LET'S LEARN!
Example 2:
Equal numbers of plastic and glass bottles were collected. If the total number of
bottles was 1,594, how many glass bottles were collected? How about the number
of plastic bottles?

1,594 ÷ 2 = N
Since you cannot divide the first digit of the dividend by the divisor,
STEP 1 divide the first two digits of the dividend.
7
2 1,594
15 ÷ 2 = 7
LET'S LEARN!
Example 2: 2 x 7 = 14

STEP 2 7
Multiply the
2 1,594
quotient in step 1 -14
by the divisor.
Subtract this 15 - 14 = 1 1
product from the
first digit of the
dividend.
LET'S LEARN!
Example 2:
STEP 3 79
Bring down the next
2 1,594
digit of the dividend.
The difference in step -14
2, together with the
digit that you bought
19 ÷ 2 = 9
19
down, will be the new
dividend. Divide this
dividend by the
divisor.
LET'S LEARN!
Example 2: 2 x 9 = 18

STEP 4 79
Multiply the quotient
2 1,594
in step 3 by the
divisor. The subtract
-14
this product from the
dividend that you 19 19 - 18 = 1
- 18
used in step 3.

1
LET'S LEARN!
2 x 7 = 14
Example 2: 797
STEP 5
2 1,594
Repeat step 3 and
step 4 until all the
-14
digits of the dividend
have been bought 14 ÷ 2 =7
19
down.
- 18
14 14 - 14 = 0
