SUBTRACTING NUMBERS
WITH REGROUPING
LET'S LEARN!
EXAMPLE: Julian and his family spent the Hoy Week in Marinduque to join the
Moriones Festival. They spent a total of ₱ 11,641 for their food and
transportation. If they spent ₱ 5,842 for their transportation, how much did
they spend for food.

Follow these steps in performing subtraction with regrouping:

Write the numbers in column.
STEP 1

₱ 11,641 total amount spent

- 5,842 amount spent in transportation

₱ 5,799 amount for food
LET'S LEARN!
We can also visualize the process of subtraction with regrouping in
the following way:

₱ 11,641--> 11,000 + 600 + 40 + 1

- 5,842 --> - 5,000 + 800 + 40 + 2
1,500 130
10,000 500 30 11

11,000 + 600 + 40 + 1
- 5,000 + 800 + 40 + 2
5,000 + 700 + 90 + 9 = 5,799
LET'S LEARN!
Example 2:
Find N in 689,356 - 98,465 = N

689,356

Example 3:
Find N in ₱ 398.40 - ₱ 129.70 = N

₱398.40
- 129.70

8 17 14

₱398.40
- 129.70
₱268.70
SUM IT UP!

When subtracting whole numbers, write the

minuend and the subtrahend in a column. Make
sure that digits having the same place value are
aligned. Start subtracting from the lowest place
value (ones) up to the highest value. Regroup
when necessary.
When subtracting amounts of money, align the
decimal point of the difference with those of the
minuend and the subtrahend.
