GLOBALIZATION

AND THE GLOBAL

VILLAGE

What is Globalization
and global village
GLOBALIZATI
ON
◉ Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the
world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border
trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and
information.

◉ You can now travel across the world anytime, too, and when you are in
foreign countries, you can now even withdraw the money from that country
from any of its automated teller machines (ATMs) as long as you have your
international debit card. This is an example of globalization.
◉ Gamble and Gamble (2013) give more complete definition of
globalization, which we will adopt for our purposes. Globalization, to
them, is the “increasing economic, political, and cultural integration and
interdependence of diverse cultures.” Because of globalization, Marshall
McLuhan’s prediction in his book The Gutenberg Galaxy, published in
1962, of a global village — one world interconnected by an electronic
nervous system [media]—has become a reality (Stewart, 2015).
◉ The most influential popular writer on the nature of globalization,
however, is Thomas Friedman, a New York Time foreign affairs
columnist. In his book, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the
Twenty-First Century, first published in 2005, Friedman argues that in
the process of globalization, which he calls the “flattening” of the world,
surprising and lightning-quick convergence of technologies allows
individuals to communicate “from anywhere to anywhere”.
◉ Globalization changes how people consume, work, and live almost
everywhere in the world. Economic, Political or Ecological relationships
are not explainable from a national perspective.

dynamic to communication skills—the need to communicate and share

pursue new and unexplored opportunities across the world. Similarly,
cultural barriers are broken down with the use of internet and mobile
technology, with distance and isolation no longer being relevant.
◉ Global communication is directly affected by the process of
globalization, and helps to increase business opportunities, remove
cultural barriers and develop a global village. Both globalization and

CONCLUSIO
N
The ‘globalization’ impacts may differ more easily across borders from time to time,
but it always brings the economics, political, social and cultural aspects of society to the
global level. The implications of globalization are perceivable to all. ‘Global village’
describes the world as a single community of interdependent inhabitants who are
interconnected by contemporary technology, especially television and World Wide Web
(www). When the world is becoming a Global Village, Globalization is an irresistible
trend. And a world becoming a Global Village is actually a double-edged sword with
Disadvantages and advantages. Nowadays, any country or even anyone is faced with
serious challenges in the global village. And if we don't bend into global village, then
we'll lag behind forever. In the tend of globalization, we are different people with
different ideas and knowledge, and has different perspective with different background.
