“A PROPOSED MODULAR HOTEL

ADAPTING CONTAINER
ARCHITECTURE AND COVID
PROTOCOLS IN THE CITY OF
BAGUIO”

BY: MARK VINCENT VELASCO DINGLE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Most Hotels in Baguio city are your typical room and lobby set up, with
some offering less activities and more on just sleeping grounds for tourists.
5 fundamental principles
Although tourism in Baguio is high because of the Tourist attractions, but in and characteristics that form
today's current situation, Tourism is not as big as before. The Covid
Pandemic decreased peoples movement with only tourists who can afford
the basis for the method of
tours being able to travel but still with restricted movement. Since Mayor Container Architecture:
Benjie Magalong implements strict Quarantine rules in the city, most tourists
wont be able to travel to some tourists spots with some even prefer to just
stay in their hotels and just be able to experience the cold weather.Baguio is
a city that also depends on Tourism that is why the city government still
 PRE-FABRICATED
pushes tourists to enter the city and allows some tourist spots and hotels to  COST BENEFIT
function, With the study, Not only will the city be Introduced to Container
Architecture but also lets the visitors experience the city in a different way.
 AESTHETICICALLY
PLEASING
Shipping containers have been integrated into the construction of commercial  SUSTAINABILITY
and residential structures in Europe and Asia for years. They say that
necessity is the mother of invention, and we don’t disagree. From emergency  OTHER POPULAR USES
shelters for soldiers to housing for densely populated cities, container
architecture has helped fill a pressing need for affordable, sustainable
structures.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Container Architecture or the use of containers in buildings is something relatively new

in architecture, one main assumption was that container architecture would belong to the
group of prefabrication because these structures use mainly prefabricated steel boxes.

Prefabrication in architecture is a 50/50 concept wherein in succeeded and also failed,

resulting to prefabricated houses representing small portion in comparison to standard
construction residences. Despite the large information related to prefabricated housing
where “container architecture” was first linked there is still lack in technical data in
thermal performance of container-homes, in comparison houses continues to be unclear
leaving a gap in this study.
GOAL OF THE STUDY
The goal of the research is to establish sustainable container hotel in terms of energy
efficiency and to Introduce Container Architecture to the city as a hotel that aims a: Low
cost, sustainable, Popular use, and aesthetically pleasing to tourists and also plan a
community based area through recreational facilities and activities in order to experience
Baguio the way locals experience it on a day to day basis despite the pandemic.

This research also aims to utilize container housing as also a construction module and
material aside from the standard construction because according to David Dross, "When
you cut holes, the containers are no longer an instrument of trade, they turn into an
instrument of construction” (2008, p.1)
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The study aims to Introduce Container Hotel as a Sustainable, Energy efficient and less maintenance housing
material. creating an envirnoment that reduces close contact to other visitors/tourists but still be a community
in a Community-Centered City. the alternative recreational facilities in the community will help introduce the
Activities and cultures the city is accustomed to.
To implement covid protocols to the design but still won’t limit the tourists movement in the Hotel through
separated cargo containers and recreational facilities and activities planned in terms of:

STRATEGIES OF THE STUDY
The strategy is to incorporate community architecture to the planning and design but still
considers the Pandemic. The Plan is to attain as many informations and data in order to
achieve the objective and goal by providing strategies that will further enhance the data
needed inorder to achieve the output provided in the diagram of the proposed framework

Below are the strategies needed for the objectives:

1.Observing the neighboring Hotels/Buildings in the Lot

2.Researching and reading related studies from foreign and local
3.Reading articles and books related to the study and
4.Conducting Interviews with local Government Officials, Hotel managements, Business
owners and also tourists.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study of container architecture is a research that can prove container housing are suitable
for Construction use where they can satisfy the customer demands to the same quality as
“standard” constructions.
Tourism Significance
- the study will not only introduce Container Architecture but also lets the visitors experience the city in a different
way. The prioritized factors of the users are mostly composed of outdoor activities like Camping, Grilling and
outdoor sports, Activities Baguio are known for.
Domestic Livelihood Significance
-The study not only aims tourist visitation but also provides opportunity for local businesses like Food, Clothing and
Art. The city is rich in culture and art and is what some tourists aims to witness or learn that is why the Study also
CONTAINER HOUSE
opens opportunity to local Artists to showcase their art in the Hotel. CONSTRUCTION
Economic Significance
-The Container Architecture specifically Cargo Container has not yet been Introduced in the city, with the study
focusing on the Hotels ability to attract tourists, The Researcher aims a rise in the Economy by not focusing more on
promoting tourists attractions in the city but by Promoting what Recreational Activities the Hotel may offer that also
reflects the city’s culture and local activities
Architectural Significance
-With Container Architecture as the main Concept of the study, Prefabrication represents the realm of the study. The
significance of the study evolves in Architecture itself for Containers may not be considered as architecture to some
but according to David Cross, “When you cut holes on the containers, they are no longer an instrument of trade. They
turn into an instrument of construction” (2008,p.1).
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study revolves around providing Alternative and
sustainable Cargo Container Housing in a community based planning,
which would viably accommodate every class of the society. The
Application of Container Architecture is only limited to the use of
Prefabricated, sustainable and energy efficient Cargo ship containers. The
Pandemic slowed down tourism in the city with most Tourist attractions,
hotels and restaurants closing down. The Study is centered on the Hotel
itself and how it would attract the Tourists by not promoting Tourist spots
through recreational promotion and container architecture.
REVIEWS OF RELATED LITERATURE
Container Architecture represents a new choice in structural
design, An innovative approach to architectural development of
new technologies and new materials in order to improve the
performance of minimum dwelling. Not only is container
construction be introduced by also its strength and durability,
modular, Availability and low cost. With container architecture still
rising, the construction process is less work compared to Standard
construction.

ACTUAL
CONTAINER CITY (LONDON)
This Lego city was built in 2001 and located in the dock area of
London. The project is made up using twenty 20‐foot shipping
containers. The containers are made of “corten” steel, the steel
panels, walls and roof are all 2mm thick.
Planning: In the UK planning permission is required for any
development involved.
Spaces: containers have been combined by stacking them and
taking out the internal walls. Thus, the range of spaces created
varies by 16, 24 or 32 foot wide rooms.
Stacking: when the containers are empty they can support 10
containers stacked up. This project has 5 storeys.

ACTUAL
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The gathered data through collected related literature about Container hotels,
compilations of journals, articles and other related data that may concern the project
will be used as basis in formulating design solution.

The design solution will be the product of all the factors, which is a Container Hotel
that would attain high satisfaction rating from tourists/visitor and will contribute to the
city as an income generating tourist spot.

dimensions that can be loaded from one form of transport to another).
Container Architecture -container architecture is a style of architecture that utilizes shipping containers for structural
components.
Community Architecture-community architecture Schemes, mainly for housing, that involve a study of the prevailing social
conditions and consultation with the people who are going to use them.
Energy Efficiency - Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing demand for energy imports, and lowering our costs on a
household and economy-wide level
Modular - Modular architecture or “modularity in design” is a design approach that subdivides a system into smaller parts
called modules or skids that can be independently created and then used in different systems.
Prefabrication - the assembly of buildings or their components at a location other than the building site.
Recreational - recreations require architecture until they become institutionalized and must provide for both active and
passive participation
Sustainability - environmental and social impacts of buildings by utilizing design methods, materials,
energy and development spaces that aren’t detrimental to the surrounding ecosystem or communities.
