Extracting DNA

from Strawberries

10 Strawberries

180mL water

200mL isopropyl alcohol

20mL dish soap

1 tsp. of salt
Freezing

•Put the alcohol in the freezer because During a

DNA extraction, a detergent will cause the cell
to pop open, or lyse, so that the DNA is
released into solution. Then alcohol added to
the solution causes the DNA to precipitate out
Adding and mixing
•After the alcohol gets cold add the dish
washer and the salt
•Then stir it gently and well
Transferring • Now transfer the Strawberries to a bag
and seal it well
Squishing •Squish the strawberries using your hands because the seeds
will be exposed evenly
• Then start adding the alcohol mixture on the strawberries
slowly and mix again
Filtering •First filter using a strain
•Then filter it again using a coffee filter
Adding Alcohol

•Then add the cold alcohol on the

filtered strawberry mixture
DNA

•As soon as the alcohol touches

the strawberry mixture the DNA
will start to float
Transferring

•Then transfer the DNA only to

the coffee filter
Filtering

•Then wash the DNA with the

remaining cold alcohol
 Before evaporation After evaporation

Evaporation • Transfer the DNA to the paper because we need to let the
alcohol evaporate from the DNA we collected
Results

•And finally, we recovered 250 mg

of the DNA
