A mathematical object used to count, measure, and label is

called number. A number can be a small or big. It can be visualized
using blocks, flats, longs, units, and cut outs of number discs. Let us
know more about them by reading and understanding this module.

Numbers can be visualized in many ways. You can

use any objects in counting. In the classroom, the
teacher usually uses blocks, flats, longs and units in
visualizing numbers. Using number discs or cut outs of
number discs is also used.

In this lesson, let’s try to focus on using the both to visualize the numbers.
Using blocks, flats, longs, and units.
By looking at the illustration, you can see that there are 12 blocks, 9 flats, 7 longs
and 3 units.
The value of each goes like this:
12 blocks is equal to 12 000
9 flats is equal to 900
7 longs is equal to 70
3 units is equal to 3
Adding them together, you will get 12 973
• You can visualize the number by writing the value of each like this:
12 000 + 900 + 70 + 3 = 12 973

Or this way:
12 000
+ 900
+ 70
+ 3
12 973

Now, let’s take a look on this:
Using cut outs of number discs, let’s visualize 12 973.
In the given illustration, you can see that number discs are used to visualize the number 12 973.
Each number disc represents different value.
The illustration shows that there are 1 ten thousand, 2 thousands, 9 hundreds, 7 tens and 3
ones.
1 ten thousand is equal to 10 000
2 thousands is equal to 2 000
9 hundreds is equal to 900
7 tens is equal to 70
3 ones is equal to 3
them together, you will get 12 973.

VISUALIZE IS BY WRITING THE VALUE OF EACH
DIGIT IN ADDITION FORM.
