Research 2

Ms. MARIECOR C. BALBER

Subject Description:
Practical Research 2 is an applied subject in STEM. Research is an important endeavor for
generating new knowledge, producing innovative designs, and applying engineering concepts to
address real-world problems. This subject lets you discover the different data analysis and traverse the
world of inquisitive, and will be able to carry out independent research on your own guided by the
fundamentals of STEM-based research.

Subject Summary of the Lessons:

Quarter 1. You will be able to decide on suitable quantitative research in different areas of interest.

Quarter 2. You will be able to formulate clearly the statement of research problem; and formulate clearly
conceptual framework, research hypotheses (if appropriate), and define terms used in study.

Quarter 3. You will be able to describe adequately quantitative research designs, sample, instrument
used, intervention (if applicable), data collection, and analysis procedures.

Quarter 4. You will be able to gather and analyze data with intellectual honesty, using suitable
techniques a. form logical conclusions b. make recommendations based on conclusions
 NATURE OF INQUIRY AND RESEARCH :
A Review

 Definition of inquiry
 1: a request for information
 2:
a systematic investigation often of a
matter of public interest
 3: examination into facts or principles
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
 Quantitative Research Definition

 Follows a carefully chosen set of procedures to

measure variables and establish a cause-and-effect
relationship among several factors.
 Are numerical forms, objective thinking, statistical
methods, and measurement – these indicate specificity,
particularity, or exactness of something.
 Makes you focus your mind on specific things by means
of statistics that involve collection and study of
numerical data.
 Characteristics

This research uses numbers and figures to denote a

particular thing and requires you to focus your full attention
on the object of your study. You tend to exclude your own
thoughts and feelings about the subject or object. This is why
quantitative research is described as objective research in
contrast to qualitative research that is objective.
Objectiveness means only real or factual, not emotional or
cognitive existence of the object. Quantitative research is
analogous to scientific or experimental thinking and it usually
happen in hard science like physics, chemistry, biology, and
medicine.
 Importance
The importance of quantitative research lies greatly in the
production of results that should reflect precise measurement
and an in-depth analysis of data. It is also useful in obtaining
objective understanding of people, things, places, and events in
this world. Attaching accurate or exact meanings to objects or
subjects, rather than inflated meaning’s resulting from the
researcher’s bias or personal attachment to things related to
the research. Requiring the use of reliable measurement
instruments or statistical methods, this study enables people to
study their surroundings as objectively as they can. This kind
of research is likewise an effective method to obtain
information about specified personality traits of a group member
or the group as a whole as regards to the extent of the
relationship of their characteristics and the reason behind the
instability of some people’s characteristics (Muijs, 2011;Gray,
2013).
Effects of Using a Blended Learning Method on Students’ Achievement and Motivation to Learn English in
Jordan: A Pilot Case Study

Abstract
This research aims at investigating the effect of blended learning on the achievement and motivation to
learn English of German Jordanian University students. A pilot case study research strategy was used. Pilot
case studies are effective research strategies for investigating educational issues in real life situations. They
are used to refine research problems, variables, and also to refine the case study design before doing it in a
larger-scale investigation. The study sample comprised 34 students who were selected purposefully and
distributed into experimental and control groups. The experimental group studied English through a
computerized program melded with the traditional method, whereas the control group was taught solely by
the latter. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) revealed statistically significant differences in achievement
between the two groups, indicating that the experimental group performed better than the control group.
Significant differences were also found in the respective groups’ motivation to learn English.
 An introduction to quantitative research
 Published on June 12, 2020 by Pritha Bhandari. Revised on July 16, 2021.

 Quantitative research is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data.

It can be used to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal
relationships, and generalize results to wider populations.

Quantitative research question examples

What is the demographic makeup of Singapore in 2020?
How has the average temperature changed globally over the last century?
Does environmental pollution affect the prevalence of honey bees?
Does working from home increase productivity for people with long commutes?
 What is quantitative research?
 Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of phenomena by
gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical, or
computational techniques. Quantitative research collects information from
existing and potential customers using sampling methods and sending out online
surveys, online polls, questionnaires, etc., the results of which can be depicted
in the form of numerical. After careful understanding of these numbers to
predict the future of a product or service and make changes accordingly.

 An example of quantitative research is the survey conducted to understand the

amount of time a doctor takes to tend to a patient when the patient walks into
the hospital. A patient satisfaction survey template can be administered to ask
questions like how much time did a doctor takes to see a patient, how often
does a patient walks into a hospital, and other such questions.
Classification

 Experimental research
 Non-experimental research
 Non- experimental research

 Has these sub-types:

 1. survey
 2.historical
 3.observational
 4.correlation
 5.description
 6.comparative research
