INTRODUCTION

Why we need to organize information ?

17
Because…..

there is a need to retrieve !

18
What happen if it is not organized?

19
It will difficult to find anything
or
retrieve information.

20
Why do we need to organize
information?

21
REASONS..
• We need information in all aspects of our life.

• Retrieval of information is dependent upon its having been organized.

22
MEANING OF WORDs..

ORGANIZE RETRIEVE

1. 1.

2. 2.

3. 3.

23
• Meriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary gives several senses in its
definition of organize.

• The one we are interested in is

“to form into a coherent unity or functioning whole:
INTEGRATE”
&
“To arrange elements into a whole of interdependent parts”

24
THE NEED TO ORGANIZE
• It is a basic drive in human is to organize.
• Phycologists tell us that
– babies’ brain organize images into categories such as faces or foods.
– Small children do a lot of organizing and matching during play.
• As we grow, humans develop more sophisticated cognitive abilities to
categorize, to recognize patterns, to sort, to relate and to create groups
of thing and ideas.
• Steven Harnad (Cognitive Scientist) said “Cognition is
categorization”.

25
CONTINUE
• Some people operates on maxim
“A place for everything and everything in its place”.

Meaning..
1. They cannot begin to work until the work surface is clear and all
objects are put into its place.
2. They has to organize before beginning a new project.

Otherwise…
They cannot think, function or give ideas !

– To expand our knowledge

Explanation

• Some of this information are already assimilated and is in one’s knowledge reserve,
while other information need to be sought. If this information is not organized it is
difficult or impossible to find.
• So we have many tools that are organized to aid in the process of finding information
that we need. For example-
– Telephone
– Books

• Libraries, archive, museum and other cultural institutions have doing
this for many years and now moved into the online world of the
Internet.

• To proper organize information in library environment, librarian need

to do Indexing, classification, and descriptive and subject cataloging
are some of the activities involved in bibliographic control.

• The quantity of information outside libraries is enormous.
• The internet is fundamentally unorganized.
