REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
The reproductive system
is the biological
system made up of all
anatomical organs involved
in sexual reproduction.
• Produces male • Produces female gametes
gametes • Receives male gametes
• Transfer them to • Carries the baby
the female throughout its
development
ANATOMY
Bladder

Rectum
Vas deferens
Seminal Vesicle
Urethra Ejaculatory duct
Prostate gland
Penis
Cowper’s gland
Glans
Prepuce
Epididymis
(Foreskin)
Testis
The scrotum regulates the Scrotum

temperature of the testes. Sperm form best at 35oC.

EXTERNAL STRUCTURES
Penis • Deposits the sperm into the vagina
during mating
Scrotum • Hangs behind the penis and contains
the testicles. It acts as a climate
control system for the testes
Testis • Responsible for making testosterone
and producing sperm cells
Epididymis • a long, coiled tube that rests on the
backside of each testicle. It carries,
stores, and brings the sperm to
maturity.
INTERNAL STRUCTURES
Vas deferens • It transports mature sperm to the
urethra in preparation for ejaculation.
Ejaculatory • formed by the fusion of the vas
duct deferens and the seminal vesicles.
• carries urine from the bladder to
Urethra
outside of the body
Seminal Vesicle • produces a sugar – rich fluid
(fructose) that provides sperms
with a source of energy and
helps with the sperms’ motility
(ability to move).
INTERNAL STRUCTURES
Prostate gland • It is a walnut-like structure which
contributes additional fluid to the
ejaculate, and help to nourish the
sperm.

Cowper’s • also called the Bulbourethral gland

gland • produce a clear, slippery fluid that
empties directly into the urethra. This
fluid serves to lubricate the urethra
and to neutralize any acidity due to
residual drops of urine in the urethra.

IMPORTANT HORMONES
Hormones are chemical messengers of the body.
They are important to maintain homeostasis.
IMPORTANT HORMONES
IMPORTANT HORMONES
IMPORTANT HORMONES
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
• FSH – signals sperm
production
(spermatogenesis)
• LH – stimulates
production of
testosterone
IMPORTANT HORMONES
Testosterone
• Most important male
hormone
• It is responsible for
regulating sex
differentiation, male
sex characteristics,
spermatogenesis and
fertility
IMPORTANT HORMONES
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
• FSH – signals
development of egg
cells (oogenesis)
• LH – plays a role in the
development of ova, and
stimulation of estradiol
and progesterone
production
IMPORTANT HORMONES
Estrogen
• instrumental in breast development, fat
distribution in the hips, legs and breasts,
and the development of reproductive
organs
• secreted by ovaries PRIOR to ovulation
IMPORTANT HORMONES

Progesterone
• helps prepare the body for potential
pregnancy
• prohibits muscle contractions in the uterus that
would cause the body to reject an egg
• secreted by ovaries AFTER ovulation
• If egg is not fertilized, progesterone levels
become low and menstruation happens

VALUING
• Taking care of the health of
the reproductive system is an
important part of being adult
like you. Practicing good
hygiene is a way of taking
care of reproductive health.
Reproductive system also known as the genital system, is
the biological system made up all anatomical organs
involved in sexual reproduction.

Reproductive hormones are usually made in the ovaries in

females and testes in males
The primary hormones involved in the functioning of the male
reproductive system are follicle-stimulating hormone (FHS),
luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone.

In the female reproductive system, as with the male, the

anterior pituitary hormones cause the release of hormones FHS
and LH, in addition, estrogen and progesterone are released
from the developing follicles.
ACTIVITY 3: HORMONES SECRETED
